Monday and Tuesday we made our monthly trip to NYC for
Deep Space and record shopping and returned with these jewels:
Hit
Dancetracks after getting lost in alpabet city (as usual). Found serious
Jeff Mills /
Purpose Maker represses on the techno wall, also grabbed an amazing
GAMM gospel workout by
7 Samurai (will do a Roots & Future piece on him soon), plus crazy
Rancho Relaxo Allstars on Abe Duque Records, some shit thats sounds like Theo Parrish and newness on Kompakt Extra. Then we got wasted at some expensive wine tasting for free (thanks Adam).
Deep Space was mostly the tits.
REKID / Radioslave / Quiet Village (I linked there because that website is fresh) was Francois K's guest and played like 5 tracks after we got there at midnight (including the crazy Prins Thomas mix of Toot D'amore), before the king of dub took over for the rest of the nite. It was kind of weak that we only got see dude for so short, but Kevorkian never disappoints with his reverb machine (does anyone know how he does this) and the
Funktion1 sound system at
Cielo is so perfect. Thankfully Kevorkian played alot of techno and then dropped some crazy wash of sirens into a short set of dubstep, which sounds retarded on that system, next was some classic soul into Swizz Beatz' "It's Me Bitches", which has the most retarded of all hip-hop beats right now. It started to slow down at like 3 and we went to
Le Souk which is better for euro shit on a Monday then Boston is on a Saturday plus it's DJ Dove and Disciple's night so it's good soulful tribal house.
Tuesday hit
TTLab and scooped that
Prins Thomas remix, 2 dubstep tracks (one with a Busta sample and some
Shackleton, which is twisted african dub drums - dude is slaying right now) and a
Raw Fusion track. They had sold out of the
new Moodyman dammit (anyone have that for me digital?)! Only had like 20 minutes at
A1 (the best record store left on the east coast?), but got Ma Foom Bey
Tony Humphries edits from '86 and more Jeff Mills. Caught the bus, got back to boring old Bean. Best part of the story? I forgot my ID in Boston and still got in everywhere and got wasted, it's so much more chill in NYC.
Sorry to bore you to death. Here are the goods (you probably should be paying me for doing all the work and buying $13 import records for you, or at least all the fake DJs need to start buying vinyl and learn how to mix):
