THE NINETIES 4: Armand Part 2 – Cutting / Henry St.

Thursday, May 31st, 2007
armand van helden old skool junkies on soul clap house music blog armand van helden old skool junkies on soul clap house music blog So I was gunna do all Armand's '94 house works in one post, but there are too many tunes and the 4 labels he was on are too long to fit in one line of the post title. So I'm breaking into 2 parts, but here's a little info that applies to this post and the one coming tomorrow. 1994 was the year that Armand broke out and defined the hard edged new garage sound that carried him and NYC's house labels through the mid '90s and ultimately played a huge role in the creation of the entire UK garage movement (actually wikipedia's entry has a ton of errors so maybe someday I'll have time to update it). [audio:inandoutofmylife-av8mix.mp3] Tonja Dantzler - In And Out Of My Life (AV8 Mix) DOWNLOAD This remix was actually released in 1993 on 'tique Records a sub-label of Woburn, MA based Critique Records, which also released albums from early '90s acts 2 Unlimited and Digital Underground! The chopped up vocals and tough swing beats on Armand's mix laid out the framework for his '94 releases and the new garage house sound. [audio:crustythecaveman-landofthelostmix.mp3] Armand & The Banana Spliffs - Crusty The Caveman (Land Of The Lost Mix) DOWNLOAD This EP came out on Cutting Records Traxx in '94 and has 2 all-time Soul Clap secret weapons on it so I gotta post my least favorite on it. If you are dieing to get your hands on 2 of the best ska/dancehall/house tracks ever then you will buy my second copy of this vinyl. [audio:hehbaby.mp3] Old School Junkies - Heh Baby - DOWNLOAD Armand's first Old Skool Junkies EP came out in 1994 on Henry Street and has 3 top choice party cuts PLUS beat tools for all of 'em. All 3 tracks are necessary, but this one is often overlooked in favor of voguing anthem Work Me! (Gadamit). It's disco house looper that samples Tata Vega's "Get It Up For Love" (edited to perfection by Dimitri From Paris in 2002). Once again...if you like this music then you will LOVE the new album so...MAKE SURE TO BUY THE NEW ALBUM ON CD HERE OR DIGITAL HERE!

THE NINETIES 3: Armand Part 1 – AV8 Records

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007
armand van helden old school on the soul clap blog I'm a little late on this, but the often mentioned D. Day had an interview with dance music legend (and one time Boston representative) Armand Van Helden last week in the Phoenix. It's a great piece, with some choice Boston history (including the roots of the Loft and shouts to DJ Bruno) and some reflections on the new album Ghetto Blaster, which brings Armand as close to his hip-hop roots as he's been since 1997's often overlooked Sampleslaya album. Remember, this dude's first releases were on party break institution AV8 Records. So in honor of the new album and also because I need to rip all my old vinyl, I think it's time for an Armand Van Helden series, beginning right here, right now. [audio:chacha-loftmix.mp3] Armand Van Helden - CHA-CHA (The Loft Mix) DOWNLOAD This is definitely one of my favorite Armand tracks of all time, partly because it was one of the first records I ever bought when it was reissued on Logic Records in 1996. This mix is off one of Armand's first records, the Pirates of the Caribbean EP, which was released in 1992 and also has the distinction of being the first release on AV8. I love it, because it's called The Loft Mix and it just breathes old-school Boston flavor. I have doubles of this EP so get at me if you want it. [audio:spinthebottle-axismix.mp3] Armand Van Helden - Spin The Bottle (Axis Mix) DOWNLOAD Another mix named after a Boston club that's also a Boston flavored banger. This was on the second Pirates of the Caribbean EP, which was also released in on AV8 after The Funky Shell Toes EP and The Buddha Baboons EP in 1993 (gota love all the crazy names - more on that in the next post). There are better tracks on this record, but I had to put the one named after a Boston landmark up. I have doubles of this EP too so if anyone wants a copy of the vinyl SHOUT! [audio:armand-av8-megamix.mp3] Gator Boots' Armand On AV8 Megamix DOWNLOAD Between the 2 Pirates of the Caribbean EPs and The Funky Shell Toes EP (which is all hip-hop breaks) there are 7 Armand party breaks. The problem is that you just can't really play most of them because they don't hit quick enough and I never can decide which is better than the others. So I made a megamix. Here is the trackslist: I Can't Wait (House Head & B-Boy Collaboration Mix) I'm Searchin (Pass the Peace Mix) Hurts A Little (Dorchester Bounce-Hall Mix) You Won't Getaway (Caps To Back Mix) Stick-Em (That's Fresh Mix) Say Yeah (Shake & Break Mix) A Deep Hip Hop Kinda Love (After Hours Mix) MAKE SURE TO BUY THE NEW ALBUM ON CD HERE OR DIGITAL HERE!

ROOTS&FUTURE5: Basic Channel / Maurizio / Rhythm & Sound

Monday, May 28th, 2007
Tonight is the ultimate ultimate for dub/techno/minimal fans in the northeast. First of all, as I've said before Deep Space, Francois K's Monday event at Cielo is the best, second of all tonight is one of the biggest events there ever. So if you are anywhere within 1000 miles of the meat packing district you will go there tonight. I think this is as good an opportunity as ever to do a ROOTS&FUTURE on these legends because there ain't no sound of now without the sounds of these deep ass Germans. History lesson: Moritz Von Oswald & Mark Ernestus released their first track as Maurizo in 1992 and have since as Basic Channel and most recentlly as Rhythm & Sound (along with some other aliases) pioneered a completely unique dub mixed with techno sound that the current minimal craze can be traced directly to. They also ran the Chain Reaction label which was responsible for putting out some serious straight ahead techno tracks including early works by current top dudes Monolake and Vladislav Delay. Their latest work as Rhythm & Sound leans more towards straight ahead dub and is showcased on their 1995 album See Mi Yah, which was then remixed by the likes of Carl Craig, Villalobos and Francois K (the master himself) among others. Needless to say: miss tonight at your own peril! [audio:freeforall.mp3] Rhythm & Sound - Free For All (Soundstream Remix) DOWNLOAD This is my favorite remix off of See Mi Yah. Sure the Carl Craig mix of Poor People Must Work is amazing, but Soundstream brews the deep dub house vibe to perfection. You can buy the aformentioned C2 mix and all the other remixes here and the original album here. [audio:trakII.mp3] Phylyps (Basic Channel) - Trak II (Untitled A) DOWNLOAD I don't really know what to say about this one other then: it's an seminal track that was released in 1994 and still sounds brand new today. Most of the old Basic Channel tracks are not available digitally so if you really want to hear the B side then you are going to have to find this at your local used purveyor of used records or on GEMM. [audio:M-4_5.mp3] Maurizio - M-4.5 (Untitled A) DOWNLOAD Actually you can get a compilation of Basic Channel remixes on Beatport and there's also a comp of alot of Maurizio releases, but it only has an edit of this one, not the full version. SUPPORT these dons and buy all their music. I'm off to chinatown to catch the Fung Wah...

Episode 10: LIVE ON WHRB – The Roots of Soul Clap

Monday, May 28th, 2007
Last week we had the opportunity (thanks to Dave Day) to throw down a live set of house and techno classics as part of Harvard Radio's 12 hour roots of house and techno marathon hosted by this dude and his boy William. They called it "From the Autobahn to I-94: The Roots of Chicago House and Detroit Techno" but we kind of took it a little broader with alot of NYC tracks and some UK stuff. It felt great to dust off some old vinyl and throw down a live mix on the radio. All the tracks are from 1990 and before and are some of our most major influences and this is the REAL Episode 10 so it's a good celebration. We don't usually bother with listing labels on our tracklists, but it's important in this case (and we put year too). In the process of putting together the tracklist I found this dude (speaking of roots of Soul Clap and also of east coast rave) and also what this record is that I've had forever but never knew what it was (I'm probably a dummy for not knowing - more on this later today)! Tracklist Frankie Knuckles - Your Love - Trax (1987) Jay Williams - Sweat (Dripping Dub) - Big Beat (1990) Raze - Break 4 Love - Grove Street (1987) Mission Control - Outta Limits - Deep South (1990) E-Culture - Tribal Confusion - Strictly Rhythm (1990) Cultural Vibe - Ma Foom Bey (A Tony Humphries Edit) - Easy Street (1986) Atmosfere - Dancing In Outerspace - MCA (1979) Joe Smooth - The Promised Land - DJ International (1987) K-Alexi - Vertigo - Transmat (1989) Yazoo - Don't Go (Re-re-mix) - Mute (1982) Egyptian Lover - Dance (Long Drum Version) - Egyptian Empire (1985) Kreem - Triangle Of Love (Dub Mix) - Metroplex (1986) Master C&J - Face It - State Street Records (1987) Frankie Knuckles ft. Robert Owens - Tears - FFRR (1989) No Smoke - Koro Koro - Profile (1990) Freestyle Orchestra ft. D'Borah - Keep On Pumpin' (Groove Me Mix) - SBK (1990) The Underground Solution - Luv Dancin' - Strictly Rhythm (1990) Earth People - Dance - Kool Groove (1989) Alessandro Novaga - Eletronic Drums - White (1980's) D-Train - Keep On (Pettibone & Humphries Edit) - Ram's Horn (1983) M. Doc - It's Percussion (Insane Mix) - Jack Trax (1988) J.M. Silk - Shadows Of Your Love (Fierce Mix) - DJ International (1986) Rhythm Is Rhythm - Nude Photo - Transmat (1987) Joey Beltram - Energy Flash - Transmat (1990) Lil Louis - French Kiss - FFRR (1989) [audio:http://soulclap.us/podcast/episode10.mp3] Episode 10: LIVE ON WHRB - The Roots Of Soul Clap SUBSCRIBE

How come Kon’s not playing?

Sunday, May 27th, 2007
Got this in my inbox today... I just don't get it, how is it that overseas parties are so star-studded that they don't have one big name, or two, but four or this case six! spread out in four rooms! B.B.E. Records appears to be cashing in on the kings of series to present what appears to be their biggest party ever with Jazzy Jeff playing Hip-Hop and Soul in two rooms, Spinna playing Hip-Hop and Soul and House in three rooms, Joe Claussell, Keb Darge AND a Techno room with Carl Craig and DJ Deep. WHHHHHHHYYYYYY do i live here again? Anyways, so they got House, Soul, Hip-hop and Techno covered (and i mean COVERED) but why they gotta leave out our boy Kon? He's clearly right for this bill and not only is he a representative of our fair city of Boston, but he also compiled the King's of Diggin' installment of the aforementioned series (with fellow On Tracker Amir) and now even has a cartoon version of himself! You go Konizzle. Word, so we thought it would be good timing to feature an exclusive mix our favorite Albanian did for European radio play to promote the big release on BBE. Watch out for Kon in the next 6 months. Hes too dope right now... Why wont he give me Re-Edits? See Kon kill the same party in London last month (no wonder) and buy his albums here. Alix Alvarez + Arnold Jarvis = Into Elysium

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007
I'm starting to really get pumped for Alix Alvarez on Friday. If you're not familiar, the SOLE channel label is a crucial player in carrying on the sound of NYC deep house. Alix's production is mad versatile, but no matter if he comes tracky, dubby, melodic or full vocal its ALWAYS deep. What stands out in my mind as some of his finest is the work he's done with vocalist Arnold Jarvis. [audio:arnoldjarvis_risingintojoy.mp3] Arnold Jarvis - Rising Into Joy DOWNLOAD I remember discovering "Rising Into Joy" (Black Vinyl Records, 2002) when was in London working as an intern for MN2S. Jon Cutler had put it on one of his promo mixes for the agency that I just could not get out of my discman. So soulful, it became an instant classic. Jay-J did a remix a year or two later, but for me its all about the original. Later in 2005, once SOLE Channel music was officially up and running (this happened in 2004), Alix release Arnold Jarvis' "Take Good Care (Of Me)". I can't tell if this was already one of Jarvis' tunes or if this was written for the SOLE Channel release. Discogs makes it look like its also a remix... Guess I'll find out on Friday! Vocal is super vibey and timeless, Big up to DJ Bruno who put this on one of his Utopia mixes that year. Dub mix is also DOPE, you can really hear that signature SOLE Channel dubby sound mixed with the soulful flavors. Word. Episode 9: Mr. Techno’s House Of Horrors

Monday, May 21st, 2007
This is really episode 10 cause of the Classic Series 1. So we're celebrating with a VERY SPECIAL guest mix from Boston's most jaded most determined (and probably best) techno dude guy. None other than the one and only Pat(ricio) Fontes. That's right just like Sergio, this dude is Portuguese and that's why we put a Mr. before his name (rumor has it that these 2 sirs will be taking over Wednesdays at the infamous Phx Landing too. Watch this space). Yeah. Pat loves what he does and he eats punk ass fake toy DJs for breakfast because he STILL BUYS VINYL and always has the heat that you don't and can mix like only a 10+ year veteran can do. He's also been producing mental Nu Noize beats and touring Europe, so if you think you know anything, you don't, Pat does. Listen and learn...
