I know. We're probably 2 weeks late on Daft Punk posts, given that they're already done with their way to short north America tour, but we had to bring it back for the kids that just got on the bandwagon. Imagine it's 1995 and Daft Punk hasn't even released Homework yet. The boys + Laurent Brancowitz had a release as Darlin' on a compilation that came out on Duophonic and the duo had 2 releases on Soma Quality, but their signature filtered funk had not yet exploded. So Thomas Bangalter started his own label to release his dirty disco tracks (Guy-Man wouldn't get around to starting his til '97 so more on that later). That label was called Roule and while each release was huge the amazing thing is that in the almost 10 years that they released tracks they put out only 10 record, but they're ALL quality and innovative! [audio:ondarocks.mp3] Thomas Bangalter - On Da Rocks DOWNLOAD The best track from the EP that started it all in 1995. A funked out, slowed down, disco floor stomper, like only this man can create. [audio:rockshock.mp3] Roy Davis Jr. - Rock Shock DOWNLOAD This was Roule 4. It came out in 1998. It's probably my favorite disco house track of all time. I used to listen to this mix that Roy did when I was driving to raves. [audio:holdon.mp3] Romanthony - Hold On DOWNLOAD This one didn't make it onto the Romanthoy post, just cause he had so many more recognizable jams, but WOW. The vocal on this is just some seriously uplifting Jersey garage music. I guess it originally came out in 1994 on Roman's own Black Male Records, but I didn't get it til it dropped as Roule 7 in 1999. Bruno actually just brought it back when he dropped it at the last Utopia at Boston Rocks last month. Hands in the air for real!

Romanthony is a a house music rarity, a prolific vocalist and prolific producer. His smooth Jersey garage sound with a dirty Chicago twist transcended the splintering house scene and was featured on a ton of early Azuli records and helped spread soulful house throughout the UK and Europe. If your not up on your dance classics then you may think you've never heard dude before, but you definitely have...he did the vocals on Daft Punk's biggest of all their big tunes. But regardless of all that, Romanthony this mystery man with roots in Jersey has produced and sang on more house hits than you can count on your hands. You can tell he's had a major influence on us and here are some of our favorite stone cold Romanthony classics. [audio:letmeshowyoulove.mp3] Buzzin Cuzzins - Let Me Show You Love DOWNLOAD The first time I heard this was on a Derrick Carter tape I got in the mid-90's. It also had a ton of other dirty garage house classics (like the Morales mix of Black Sheep - Stobelight). I'll rip that tape soon, cause it's ridic, but for now you can enjoy this swinging monster that was released on Azuli in 1994 and will still be rinsed heavily forever. [audio:trust.mp3] Romanthony Presents Lifestyles - Trust (Wah Trust Mix) DOWNLOAD It's all about the Ghost Mix for stripped down bumpy floor rocking, but the the full filtered dopeness of this mix showcases Romanthony's amazing musicianship. It was released in '96 on Downtown161 a longtime distributor and label out of NYC and you can buy one of our copies of the vinyl if you really want to beat it up properly. Not much of Romanthony's material is available digitally so goto your neighborhood record store and cop some classics or you can buy his albums on CD here.

Europe... I'm so jealous of you. You get to do what Americans always wish they can do; party all week long and listen to Techno in the backyard of the local castle, nize. For those of you who aren't familiar, Portugal's annual Anti-Pop Festival has grown from a one night experiment in 05, to a three day extravaganza with some of the worlds best electronic music in'07. With names like Richie Hawtin, Ellen Allien and Apparat, Mathew Dears Big Hands, Gui Borrato, Octave One, Magda, Troy Pierce, Extrawelt, Paul Kalkbrenner, Gaiser, Hearthrob and Rui Vargas, its no wonder party monsters came out by the thousands. Major sound, major lighting effects, major talent... Skys the limit when the sponsors finally see the big picture. I recently got an email from young Paulo with the title "Is it evil enough?" and a tracklist for his new mix. Who knows what possessed him to try to make the most evil mix possible only like a week after he moved to beautiful Buenos Aires, where the weather is still nice even though it's winter time, but damn, the kid turned it out with some serious deep darkness. It was even harder for me to post this mix with the weather in Boston straight up 90F and humid for like the last 2 weeks, but luckily today it's raining so I feel a little evil. You can see the kid's development from Paulocast to this mix, with super stylized track selection and more complex mixes, plus he put 2 Shackleton tracks on it! The Villalobos remix of Blood On My Hands (where the title for the mix is from) is def one of my top 5 tracks of '07 it's just so darkdarkevil that it's hard to rinse, so props to P for getting it in right.
