This Wednesday we welcome back the spanish don dada of techno for his third time at the phoenix landing for special Midweek Techno extravaganza. The last two times we had the honor to host this artist has been a treat for any ears to hear live and direct. It’s Paco Osuna playing live at Club4… to hold you over!

On Wednesday, May 13th, Midweek Techno proudly presents another Boston first time appearance and one of our most anticipated bookings of 2009.

From Berlin we welcome Panorama Bar resident DJ extraordinaire Cassy. As a DJ / producer in the vast cosmos that is electronic music, to have a unique sound is an artists greatest strength. Cassy has that sound and it sounds like deep hypnotic analogue magic, finished off with one of the most recognizable voices in dance music today. Almost always repetitive and sometimes even incomprehensible, her subliminal crooning and flawlessly programmed VINYL ONLY DJ sets have propelled Cassy to the top of undergrounds most wanted list. Deeply inspired by electronic music and the club scene of Austria and England, as a young adult Cassy wanted a piece of the action. Her first instinct was to use her background as singer to provide vocals on other artists records, which worked for her first musical release, but she was soon convinced that if she could not only involve herself as a singer but to learn how to mix records she would get much further. This philosophy worked extremely well for her and by 2003 she made the pilgrimage to Berlin and proceeded to build a reputation as a talented house and minimal DJ. Cassy’s first real big break was when she secured a residency at the legendary Panorama Bar and had the honor of mixing “Panorama Bar 01” on Ostgut Tonträger, the record label of Berlin’s Berghain club. This was the doorway that lead to collaborations with some of the big boys of modern dance music such as Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano and Steve Bug. With a start on Geneva’s Mental Groove Records to date Cassy has released original tracks and remixes on labels such as M_nus, Playhouse, Get Physical, Perlon, Dessous, Cocoon and her own label appropriately named Cassy.

Check out this recent promo DJ set to see what we’re talking about!

Advance tix are available here. We will open early at 9pm for this special performance with a warm up set from DJ Sergio Santos. Cassy’s set time will be from 10p-1a. Midweek Techno takes place every Wednesday at Pheonix Landing, 512 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA. Midweek Techno is 19+.

In anticipation of Abe Duque’s performance at Midweektechno tomorrow, Wed 2/18, we’ve asked “Mr Techno” himself Pat Fontes to dig into this artist who has inspired so many. Let us not forget that we will be celebrating Pat’s birthday tomorrow, and while we dont think Abe Duque will be popping out of a cake, we do think that he will punishing the Pheonix Landing sound system with exclusive nastiness.

We let Pat Fontes take it from here…

So Underground It Hurts is more than just Abe Duque’s motto, its literally his signature etched into all of the vinyl releases on his limited edition imprint Abe Duque Records. He’s also done away with your everyday paper artsy labels, opting instead for more pronounced etching where a label might have been. Sometimes he even avoids track titles all together. Im guessing he does this to let the music speak for itself, but i gotta tell you that it’s something I truly admire and have the upmost respect for! Here are a few of Abe Duques tracks that I’ve ripped so you can hear his sound.

Abe Duque – Untitled A1 [Abe Duque Records 005 - Besame Mucho! - 2003]
DOWNLOAD / BUY VINYL
The first track of choice and all time favorite released in 2003 is a lil jacking freaky breaky number that is a proven party rocker with snip samples of some dude repeating “feel that…..ah… feel that funk !”  Hearing all the crackles and pops you can probably tell that I have worn this record out like a pair of running shoes in a marathon. You can find this tune entitled Besame Mucho on Abe Duque Records #5

Abe Duque – What You Gonna Do? vs Disco Lights
DOWNLOAD
The second track is actually a mix of two tracks that marries Abe Duques somewhat Detroit style to his more edgy NY/Berlin flavor. Defined as house to some and techno to others, both tracks combine well. The opening track includes a cameo from non-other than Blake Baxter, which on the flip of this record has the big 2004 hit “What Happened” (a question some of us still ask ourselves once the sun is up) The other record does the same asking ” What you gonna do ?” so yea what you gonna do ? Disco Lights … Club Nights … definitely!

Thank you Pat . Based out of NYC, Abe Duque is well known as a founding member of the Rancho Relaxo Allstars along with Dietrich Schoenemann and John Selway. He has also worked closely with DJ Hell co-producing many of his records. Abe Duque has released original music and remixed since 1993 on labels including Tresor, Tension, International Deejay Gigolo’s and many others. As a DJ Abe has travelled far and wide to play his music, from his once club residency Limelight in NYC to many stops around the globe. See some fun videos here.

Nicolas Jaar is younger than you, but he already has quite the jump on the electronic music establishment. Born in NYC and raised in Chile, Nicolas has a very organic approach to electronic music. At 14 he began producing and by 17 he had his first release on Wolf+Lamb. With a Seth Troxler remix of his “The Student” due on W+L vinyl and his own Clown & Sunset label set to launch this month, you don’t want to miss his first Boston appearance this Wednesday (2/4/09) at Phoenix Landing. For a full bio and a preview of Nicolas’ live set make sure to check out his recent appearance on AirPod.

How did you get into electronic music in the first place?
I got into electronic music when I realized that it could be organic and warm and nice like other types of music. I first listened to Villalobos’ Thé au Harem d’Archimède when I was 14 years old and to this day I think it is his best work. At around the same time I had just started tickling Reason – the software. The first track I ever did with a kick drum is Hage Chahine and it was released on Wolf + Lamb when I was 17 three years later.

Who are your major influences?
My major influence is the dancer Evelyne Meynard.

How’d you link up with Wolf+Lamb?
I sent a track called “the student” to Gadi and Zev after hearing them speak in a NYU radio show. Hearing both of them talk about the future of music made me realize they were the place for me. Wolf + Lamb is now my spiritual home. As incredibly talented producers and individuals, they have the brightest future ahead of them in the next few months.

Do you feel like there’s a new generation of young electronic producer’s that are going to change the shape of the music over the next 5 years?
Music has to evolve. Like everything else. I’m working on creating my own instrument for the live experience to grow out of its present 17″ dimension. I feel a lot of people are starting to understand that, as electronic music producers, we cannot go on sharing our music through nothing more than a computer; in the next 5 years a new conception of performance should begin to emerge, shaping the mold, creating a new stage for new music to arise. I’ve recently created my own label Clown and Sunset, a platform for young artists that share similar views to express themselves.

Second: Sunday (11/16/08) is a very special edition of Midweek Techno on a different night because we have m_nus recording artist Paco Osuna touching down for a very special Boston appearance.
Continuing in our recent tradition of bringing New York City’s finest techno artists up 95. This Wednesday (10/15) we’d like to welcome good friend and fellow AirDrop family member Connie to the Midweek Techno decks, yo. Connie is known around the world as one of the finest selectors and her energy behind the decks is up there with the best around, so of course she holds a residency at ReSolute, one of NYC’s top underground dance events. But did you know that Connie also plays the drums in bands in and around NYC, and did we mention her first original production as conSTAR is set to be released on AirDrop’s forthcoming Extraction USA compilation (which also features MWT resident Pat Fontes’ “Ill Lillies” & Soul Clap’s “Astroturfing)? To really understand Connie though, you have to be on a dancefloor that she is beating, or at least hear one of her mixes, luckily AirDrop has featured her twice on their AirPod and she kindly sent us 2 recent mixes to post, so without further ado we present the one and only Conster in the mix!

Connie – High Hummer Mix DOWNLOAD

P.S. if you’re not near the Boston area or can’t make it out, Connie will be performing live on Soul Clap Radio on Thursday (10/16) from 12-2pm. TUNE IN HERE.

You may have already seen their visual work in the window over at LAB, but now you can hear the sound that is Fase Miusic and if you cought fellow Argentines Dilo and Gurtz a couple weeks back then you know the mayhem to expect!

True wine snobs know that the real good stuff comes from France. True cigar aficionados know that there is nothing like product from Cuba. Sergio knows that the best smoke comes from the Humbodlt Valley, and while the best dance music hasn’t always come from Berlin, electronic music connoisseurs know that Dixon’s sound can only be classified as the finest German import.

Wednesday, September 24th Dixon will perform at Wednesday’s @ Phoenix Landing for a FIRST EVER Boston/Cambridge appearance. We are ecstatic about the show because Dixon is an extraordinarily rare act to book. The man, alongside Ame, behind Innervisions Recordings has stayed true to his deep roots, redefining the sound of contemporary European house music. He embodies the history of dance music and disco and (much like matty dimond!!!) is a master of DJ programming. Door will open at 9pm for this special night with a warm up from House/Techno trendsetter Sergio Santos. The cover is $10 all night. ALSO, THIS IS A 19+ EVENT.

This coming Wednesday (9/10/08) we welcome one of my current favorite DJs. All the way from Greece via Berlin, the one and only K.atou. I first saw her play on the terrace at the ReSolute party at this year’s Detroit Techno Fest and she blew me away with a sound that is the perfect marriage of hypnotic house and groovy techno (oh yeah and she played Somore – I Refuse)! So now we’re lucky enough to have this lady on the rise in a big way coming to Boston for the first time ever, so don’t sleep Just to get you even more excited here’s a little interview and a the most recent K.atou mix I could find…

Where does the name K.atou come from?
Katou is the French nickname of Catherine or Katerina which is my real name.

What are the parties like in Greece?
I haven’t played in Greece for a while, recently i organized with a friend a 2 day party with Bruno Pronsato, Jan Krueger, Matt John, Elon, Miss Fitz in a Greek island but that was a different case of party of how they r in Athens or other bigger cities. It was at the beach, playing on the sunrise and jump for a swim anytime u had a long record playing..jk. Things r good in Greece but as far as artists invited pretty repetitive which is disappointing in my point of view.

What was the first record you ever bought? Your most treasured record?
First record i ever bought was new order and my most treasured record is the Saturday Night Fever on vinyl.

Where you from? Where you at?
From Greece, at difference place a year almost..hopefully I’ll root somewhere…at that time of answering I’m at the Iguana Cafe, N. Halsted, Chicago, Illinois.

What was the best place you ever played? What was the weirdest place you ever played?
Best place I’ve ever played is club der visionaere without a doubt, weirdest place was the living room of my now flat mates in Berlin at their farewell party in Santa Fe, New Mexico. they booked Lee Curtiss and me for their party which took place in the actual house…weird in a good way for me and excellent cuz it was different from all the weekend club gigs u know…

Top 5 songs of all-time? Top 5 songs right now?
since u said songs n not tracks i go for no techno music top 5s
1. grace jones- pull up to the bumper
2. joe cooker- dont let me be misunderstood
3. curtis mayfield-move on up
4. steely dan-do it again
5. fleetwood mac- little lies

now:
1. bruno pronsato-nobody calls (hello?repeat 013)
2. boris werner-sambosa (remote area)
3. horseshoe-collage (cabinet classics)
4. two armadillos-nostalgia “(tobias remix)
5. todd terry-i thought your love

2 truths and a lie
i love my family,i love food,i love airports.

Proudest musical accomplishment
my jazz, rock n roll and blues record collections

Vinyl or digital?
both.

Mr Cloutier has made his mark in the big apple as a DJ for the Brooklyns famous Bunker parties as well as Subtrak Records. We first met up with him at this year’s DEMF where he pushing the Accelerate Afterparty @ The Works with Daniel Bell, Sammy Dee and Zip on the line-up.
This Wednesday (6/18/08) we’re pleased to welcome former Bostonian and current LAer Inanna as she celebrates the launch of her brand new La Folia Recordings. But before you come hear it, read what she has to say…

What’s your inspiration for La Folia? The name and vision.
La Folia is type of melody, contrary to what most people think, that it is the word for flower, foliage or some sort of vegetation in a european language.
The logo is a bit misleading in that regard. It is an interpretation of a rose, which has many meanings and its safe to assume I probably found inspiration from all of them. The three roses also has significance, in that there is three, and three, as a trinity was an inspiration.

I wanted to create a platform with the label to not only release my own music, and people who’s music I admire, but music by other artists who were unique, and a little different then the status quo. Creativity and experimentation is the core idea. The focus was mainly intended to be on melodic music across all genres but we have some rhythmic based music in there as well, and listening music as well as dancing.

What’s it take to start a label these days?
You know I’m not really sure; music firstly. Inspiration. Knowledge and experience is helpful. Cash is also very helpful, so any investors out there I’m looking. The rest I am sort of making up as I go along and letting intuition guide me. 11 years in it, and being in LA for several years, I was fortunate to meet successful label owners, and artists and just being around them, you pick things up.

You’ve come a long way from playing 2-Step at rave parties in New England. How has your style developed and what has influenced you?
What I play and produce is vastly different then what I was doing when I started. I love so many different genres of electronic music but felt the need to really focus on one style, at least narrow it down to a couple anyway. I started out influenced by Chicago deep house from all the Providence house weeklies I would go to every week. At the same time I was putting on and playing the 2-step weeklies I also had residencies and gigs for deep house. Speed garage is what lead me to 2-Step. When grime became the thing, and 2-step was on its demise, I just couldn’t get into it and started looking back to house, then techno. I have always been into melody based music, emotive and deep music with thick bass-lines. Techno and minimal for the most part lack that cheeky vibe much of the 2-step I played had, and my sound just naturally evolved into what I like to sometimes call emo-techno.

What was the first record you ever bought? Your most treasured record?
You know I’m not sure! I remember the record store, but have no recollection of the records. It was a nice pile of deep house. My most treasured record is actually an original pressing of Crosby Stills and Nash self tiled album from 1969 my friend Henry gave me.

Where you from? Where you at?
Literally or figuratively I wonder. I’m right where I started from, literally. I’m living with my Mom! Did I just admit that? How did this happen. Well life has brought me here, only for a little while longer. Its where Im going that matters most to me right now, destination Europe.

What was the best place you ever played? What was the wierdest place you ever played?
I played in Mexico to about 4500 people, for four hours, and was on right after Nortec Collective which played with a 10 piece band. I was completely scared, I mean how do you top 3 producers and a 10 piece band in costume! That was just insane, and it was awesome! The crowd loved it and just had so much fun. One of my most favorite sets to play though was a Tuesday night in Boston DJ Melee used to throw. The crowd was small but I just had so much fun that night and I’ll always remember it.
Weirdest…
Maybe the ski resort rave in vermont where there were crazy ravers walking around while families of four were on vacation. It was not really that cool.

Top 5 songs of all-time?
Judy Blue Eyes – Crosby Still and Nash
Nocturne in C sharp minor – Chopin
Space Oddity – David Bowie
Close To Me – Cure
Because – The Beatles

Top 5 songs right now?
Summer – Fulmen – Republika Records
New Speakers – Kaine – Spacetalk Recordings
Klopfgerausch – Erman Erim – Terminal M
TrÀumchen – Housemeister – allyoucanbeat
Harzer Roller – Dominik Eulberg, Gabriel Ananda – United Recordings

2 truths and a lie
The trees can talk. I know what your thinking. I watch Oprah.

Proudest musical accomplishment
Starting the label. I’m already astonished at what I’v done with it in such a short time and can’t wait to keep going with it.

Vinyl or digital?
I want my cake and to eat it too. Why must I have one over the other?

Every year around WMC time our techno starved Boston scene has the chance to go beyond the usual American guest performers and bring in talent from around the world. This week is WMC and true to form we’ve got Geneva bred and Berlin based Quarion performing live on Wednesday night, before he heads down to Miami for a slew of big slots. Quarion is a man of many names who has a grip of recent hits and amazing remixes and I had the chance to catch up with him for an interview before he headed stateside. Don’t sleep Boston, now’s your chance to pretend your in Miami even though you’re not.

You’ve had a very versatile career, do you see any major differences between making all your different styles?
mhhhh, not so much, but I think that making proper “dance” music is quite difficult. There are certain “codes” that you have to follow and at the same time go to a totally new direction. It’s really exciting working on tracks, but it also can be a total downer. But in all the different stuff I do, I have to say that my hip-hop tracks are the ones that flow the most easily, I don’t have problems or doubts when I create Hip-Hop beats…

When and why did you come up with the Quation alias? What does it mean?
The Quarion project came about after the Enterplay album. Enterplay is a project that I developed with Rosario (Mental Groove, Geneva) and DJ Kent (Force Of Nature, Tokyo). We released an album in 2005 and organized an European and Japan tour in 2006. The whole Tour was incredible, especially in Japan. Honestly: it was a life-changing experience for me: the scenery, the people, the culture and the passion that the Japanese have for music was really intense. Plus the Force Of Nature guys were playing so much incredible music that my head was full with ideas…
When I came back to Geneva, in may 2006, it took me a while to go back to the studio, but when I did, I came up with “Karasu”. I felt from the beginning that this track was special so I thought I would use a new moniker for this project…

I can’t say what “Quarion” means yet, let’s have people guess it for theselves

I know you live in Berlin now, but it seems like the scene in Switzerland, where you’re from, is really on fire right now. What’s it like over there? What are some key producers, labels and clubs?
Yes totally! These last few years have seen an emergence of incredible producers coming out of Switzerland. What is quite surprising is that, there’s not so many good clubs, especially in Geneva. It’s really sad, but there used to be a lot of great clubs, bars or squatts in Geneva where you could hear and dance to electronic music. Now there must be only 2! The city got really repressive with all the cultural actors a few years ago and it’s still continuing to this day. It’s really sad. The crazy thing is, there’s so many DJs & labels from Geneva but they never play in their hometown. There’s people like Lee Van Dowski, Quenum, Dachshund (Num records); Agnès (Sthlmaudio); Chaton (Plak records); Crowdpleaser, Waterlilly, Kate Wax (Mental Groove), Kadebostan (Freunde Am Tanzen)…plus Luciano also came back to Geneva. In Lausanne: Ripperton (Perspectiv), Alex & Stéphane Attias (Visions, Freedom Soundz). Berne: Deetron (music Man), A Few Among Others. Zürich: of course the whole Drumpoet crew: Alex Dallas (the Lost Men), Lexx (Kawabata), Ron (Soultourist)…then there’s Serafin from Mountain People, Kalabrese, etc…

What was the first record you ever bought? Your most treasured record?
1) Fat Boys “The Twist” (I was 10 or something!)
2) Really hard to say, maybe “Dedication” from Herbie Hancock because it’s not easy to find. Sounds like Techno but made more than 30 years ago…

2 truths and a lie
Not in the right order of course: I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I’m a nice guy.

Proudest musical accomplishment
Well, I’m really proud of my track “Karasu”. I’m usually super-critical with my stuff but this one is flawless in a certain way…I’ve kinda moved a bit from this sound since then, but this track is definitely a milestone for my artistic and personal life. Everything changed after that…

Vinyl or digital?
I’m a strong supporter of vinyl, even though I play CDs aswell. The feeling you have when you’re cueing, mixing and seeing the needle “sailing” on the record is unsurpassed I think…even with Serato/Final Scratch, it’s just not the same.

Top 5 songs of all-time? Top 5 songs right now?
Old is too hard, but here we go:
Herbie Hancock “Butterfly” Columbia
Keith Murray “The Rhyme (Slum Village RMX)” Jive
Global Communications “The Way (Secret Ingredients RMX) Dedicated (I actually discovered this track last week…I’ve been listening to it everyday since! I don’t know how I missed this track when it came out!!!)
Photek “Ni Ten Ichi Ryu” Science
Galaxy 2 Galaxy “Hi Tek Jazz” Underground Resistance

New:
Johnny D “Touched Soul” Deep Vibes
Luna City Express “Seven” (Agnès Dubhouse RMX) Moonharbour
Dachshund “Holiday now” Perspectiv
Soultourist “Fo Eva” Drumpoet Community
Fabrice Lig “The Track” Versatile

Your label just celebrated it’s 50th release, that’s a pretty huge accomplishment in our little dance music world. What’s the philosophy behind the Fade sound & how have you managed to keep it going this long?
the label has always been another creative outlet for me. it has never been a tool for making money or anything financial. it has simply been another way that I can be involved with the music I am really into. I sign tracks that I think are interesting and fresh, but also adding something new to the label’s overall sound and development too. I want to always keep the sound of the label moving forward and growing just as I do as a DJ and a producer. the reason it has been able to continue keep going is that I put out tracks l like and believe in and am ready to stand behind whether it sells 1 copy or 10, 000 copies.

What was the first record you ever bought? Your most treasured record?
the first record I bought when I started buying house music was “a guy called bat” by the beat pirate, and also mickey oliver’s “in ten si t”. the most treasured record, that is tough, I have some that I value and love for the sheer memories they conjure, but choosing one, I might have to choose jc001 – favourite breaks.

Where you from? Where you at?
I was born in Virginia beach, but grew up from 7 years old to mid-20’s in central florida, so I guess I would call florida my original home. but I have been living in nyc for the past 9 years. right now I am doing this interview from mexico. I just finished 3 gigs this weekend here, all really good.

What was the best place you ever played?
the best place ever is hard to nail down to one place, or one gig. but if I have to choose one in the past year, it would be Lebanon. the club was like this underground bunker outside of the city. it was rammed packed and people just going for it to the music. one thing that made it more remarkable was that they had a retractable roof that they would open for effect. so during the nights in certain music themes, the roof would open and the skies and stars peered down and the place would erupt.

What was the weirdest place you ever played?
there have definitely been some weird gigs, with weird setups and weird occurrences. but one gig that was weird on so many levels was a gig a few years ago in venezuela. the gig itself while playing was ok, but the strange and un-nerving thing was that I had these armed guards following me everywhere I went (for protection). they stayed outside my hotel room in the hotel hallway, the followed me into the toilets in the club and restaurants. they blocked people from trying to speak with me or shake my hand. it was pretty uncomfortable the whole experience and not one I am eager to repeat.

Proudest musical accomplishment
proudest musical accomplishment has to be working with sarah mclachlan and delerium on “silence” and watching that become a worldwide hit. something we never expected, but to see it from the studio to becoming a #1 in some many countries and people singing to the words in clubs, it is pretty special.

Vinyl or digital?
vinyl all the way. I will always be a music fan and record collector and do not ever want to lose it. I love everything about vinyl and it gives me the most comfort when I am djing.

Top 5 songs of all-time?
a guy called Gerald – emotions electric
pleasure – please (remix)
unknown dj – basstronic
the klf – kylie said to Jason (remix)
octave one – I believe

Top songs for February ‘08
01 R Play – Taper (Synewave)
02 James T Cotton – The Second Night Cycle (Spectral Sounds)
03 Approved Electronic Device – Theme Scheme (W/L)
04 Chris Fortier – As Long As The Moment Exists (Error Error Remix) (EQ)
05 Code Talkers – Land of Thor / So (Fade Records)
06 Marc Romboy & Tyree Cooper – Lost (Ovum)
07 Chris Fortier – Fill In The Blank (40oz Music)

This Wednesday (2/20/08) our techno commander in chief, the one and only Senhor (that’s Portuguese for mister) Pat Fontes is celebrating his birthday by bringing in his homey, NYC techno innovator extrordinare and founder of Ransom Note US, Adultnapper. This dude is doing the damn techno thing hard in the big city. With releases on some of our favorite labels (Dirt Crew Recs, Audiomatique, Mule Electronic & Railyard), a production/DJ partnership as Sycophant Slags with Mr. C, the legendary london MC/DJ/producer/owner of The End AND his own label, Ransom Note gaining momentum with each release, we are honored to have this international techno player touching down in our littler than little Phoenix Landing. In anticipation of this momentous occasion we got the chance to catch up with Francis Harris (the man that is Adultnapper) for an interview, plus an exclusive link to one of his recent live mixes, so learn up and then come get down.

What was the first records you ever bought?
My first records were mostly 7 inch punk, indie, and no wave records. I think my first actual purchase was a circle jerks 7 inch. When I was a kid, I asked my mom to buy me Devo’s “Whip it,” but she made the purchase, so I guess that doesn’t count.

Your most treasured record?
New Order: Movement -original Factory Records Test Press

What was the first rave/club/party you went too?
Not sure if it was “Hard” or “Harder,” Richie Hawtins famous parties in Detroit. My girlfriend at the time loved techno and dragged me to one of those events. I was a hardcore/indie kid who hated techno. The event was quite amazing ,even though I wasn’t really into the music.

Where you from? I was born in New Mexico and grew up in Las Vegas.

Where you at? Brooklyn, NY

What was the best place you ever played?
The main floor of the End in London. Nautilus Disco, Bari, Italy.

What was the weirdest place you ever played?
A strip club in Denver

What music are you into/producer/spin/release?
I really into all types of music, but lately I’ve been getting really into artists like Tim Hecker, Dead Texan, Deaf Center, Fennesz, Hannu. Lots of ambient/experimental classical stuff. Just really into atmospheric emotional music. As far as production, I make late night atmospheric tech house. I am also in the process of recording non dance oriented music that will be more for an album. As far as club music goes, I’m really inspired by producers like Efdemin, Lawrence, H.O.S.H., Stimming, Solomun, Matthew Dear, Alexi Delano, John Tejada etc. I guess its dance music with a more musical edge, not just a bunch of funny noises.

Top 5 songs of all-time?
Thats really tough. Heres an approximate:
John Coltrane – My Favorite Things
Pharoah Sanders – Creator Has a Master Plan
Slint – Washer
New Order – Leave Me Alone
The Smiths – Stop Me
Hoover – Electrolux

Top 5 songs right now?
NonDance
Fennesz Sakamoto – Oto
Greg Haines – Snow Airport
Letters Letters – Between the Seams
Robert Lippock – Rearrange
Deaf Center – Dial (Helios remix)

Dance
Par Grindvik – Ensemble: Stockholm LTD
Anthony Collins – Bricolage – Liebe Detail
Rodriguez – Rubbo Swingo – Leena
Lee Jones and Daniel Drier – A man and a woman (Marco Ressman mix) – Upon You
Solomun and Stimming – Ghostdog – Diynamic

2 truths and a lie:
I sleep.
I eat.
I have a good idea of what this is all about.

Proudest musical accomplishment
First chair on the vibes in 2nd grade.

Vinyl or digital?
Vinyl with a sprinkle of digital. Yummy.

First off please allow us to apologize for the lack of podcast last week. It was very unfortunate that we lost a fantastic “decks ‘n efx” set from Cates & DPL who did Techno damage on 2/6/08. We’re working on getting a live mix from them to post so you can hear the noise they make, meantime check out DPL’s youtube channel, hilarious!

Last week we celebrated Unlocked Groove/Zer0 G Sounds label owner Eddie O’s birthday with sonic re-enforcement from resident DJ Sergio Santos and local hell raiser Alan Manzi. The atmosphere was none-the-less “festive” and things got a little hairy behind the decks, however as we all know at the Phoenix landing you can run, but you can’t hide from the one’s and two’s . Regardless, another 4 hours of heady mental bangers.

In terms of staying on top of new music, little is left uncovered by resident DJ Sergio “the digital goldmine” Santos and last weeks DJ set was living proof. Joined by crowd pleaser Jay Prouty, the two tagged up a storm ripping forward moving techno sounds all night long. For those that don’t know, Jay comes from a progressive back round, so his sound could be classified as a progy approach to the bigger deep-bassline techno a la Robert Babicz, Stefan Bodzin or Damien Schwartz.

Listen to this pounding DJ set, its no surprise these guys are a favorite for Boston’s big room gigs. Ironically, Sergio and Jay can also be found once a month in a very small room at their Fresh Fruit parties.

On Wednesday, January 23rd 2008 a Cambridge first will take place at Wednesdays @ Phoenix Landing. Go Chuck Yourself! – 2 Chucks, 1 Stage, 4 Hours of House and Techno BLISS! If you dont get it, get this Charlie aka Chuck aka DJ Cnyce of Soul Clap will perform with Boston legend Chuck Caseroc. In anticipation of this monumentally dope and hilarious affair, we asked Chuck if he’d interview Chuck to find out exactly what makes him Chuck… er… tick!

Chuck – When/Why did you start DJing? Describe your sound…
Chuck – I started DJing around 1992. I had been going to The Loft with some friends and heard Nightcrawlers “Push The Feeling On”. I kind of became obsessed with that track and tracked it down at Boston Beat [closed], which had just moved to Boylston Street from East Boston. I started collecting House records and Break records around that time. I wanted to learn how to mix records together. I consider my sound to be House. I’ve always played House
and variants of it but the majority of stuff I played at the Phoenix [Landing] would be considered Chicago/West coast style. Even though I’ve always been into the techier stuff as well, I hesitate calling my sound Tech House because I hear a lot of Tech House that I don’t think is that good. I like a good deep mental atmosphere in my tech stuff not just some banging for the sake of banging shit, ya know?

Chuck – What was Boston like then? Where did you used to get your music?
Chuck – For me, Boston was insane back then. There were illegal break in warehouse party’s way down Massachusetts Ave, a bunch of club nights going on and of course the mega raves if you were able to travel out of the city. I was also meeting all these DJs that I heard and thought were amazing like DJ Overload, DJ Bruno, John Debo, Dale Charles and 333 & Mgee. I always thought it was cool that these guys took the time out to talk to me about music and some of them I became good friends with.

I got most of my music from used places like Looney Tunes, In Your Ear, Nuggets and Planet Records [all these stores are still open, perhaps Chuck is good luck!!!]. I would also go to Newbury Comics for the sale bin. I didn’t really have the loot for brand new records but I would be in Boston Beat and Beat Non-Stop [closed] all the time listening to new stuff and maybe buying a new track here and there.

Chuck – How did the original Phoenix Wednesdays first start?
Chuck – The first dance night at the Phoenix Landing was a night called “Sunday Service” with these Irish DJ’s Peter Bailey and Foxy John. This night was crazy. It was all these Irish ex-pats going absolutely apeshit to Techno and Trance. Shannon [Shalako] got a gig at that night, rocked it, and was invited by the owner Kevin Trainor to start a Wednesday. I was returning from an 8 month “vacation” in Denver and was asked by Shannon [Shalako] if I wanted to do the night with him. We had our first night in March of 1997.

Chuck – Who was responsible for making the party happen?
Chuck – Kevin Trainor, Peter Bailey, Foxy John, Shane, Dolores, Blake Courtney, Shannon [Shalako] and myself [Caseroc].

Chuck – What were some highlights (crazy nights, great guests etc…)?
Chuck – Every Wednesday was pretty fuckin crazy. Some highlights were:

• DJ Osheen playing a trance set
• DJ Hell and the International Deejay Gigolo tour with Acid Scout and Acid Maria.
• Steve Bug
• Dave Skye being brought in as the 3rd resident
• DJ Assault and the Detroit Grand Poobahs
• Funk D’Void
• L.A. Williams
• Pepe Braddock
• 5 year anniversary with Derrick Carter
• Garth
• Bernard Badie showing up and asking if he was in the right place
• Matthew Dear live

I’m actually going to ask Shannon [Shalako] to put up the list of past performers back up on the Redlight website there were so many I can’t remember them all.

Chuck – Best PHX Wednesday moment ever?
Chuck – One of the best phoenix moments to me was a New Years Eve, early on, when it fell on a Wednesday night. The place was rammed. It was definitely capacity. Shannon [Shalako]and I had a bagpipe player up on stage with us and when the clock struck 12 it was all over. The guy was blasting away on the bagpipes and we were rocking out. It was extremely intense.

Chuck – If you could have the career of any DJ who would it be? Why?
Chuck – I have spent an enormous amount of time and energy (and money) building my own career. I am finally at the point where I can balance working 50 hours a week at my day job and being able to still play gigs a couple times a month. It wasn’t easy, and I have a sacrificed a lot and am still in it. I wouldn’t want any other DJ’s career because i am proud of my own accomplishments. There was one point where Shannon [Shalako] and I had been at the Phoenix for 333 consecutive Wednesdays. I have also held residencies at Hibernia (now defunct), the Wonderbar, and now the Goodlife one Friday a month with Judea Stonez, and one friday a month with Scott Bliss.

-Besides raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, what are a few of your favorite things?
• My wife Sally
• My cats Tiger and Bella
• Designing flyers
• Painting
• Reading
• Learning a new computer program
• Snowstorms
• Anna’s Taquiera
• House of Siam
• The chicken fingers from AK’s by my house
• Beach days/lake days
• Cooking outside
• Travelling to new places
• Good friends
AND
• My family

Chuck – All Chucks/Charlies have nicknames, growing up what was yours? What is the best thing about being a Chuck?
Chuck – My real name is William[WTF!!!!]. I was named Chuck by my Aunt Liz who passed when she was real young. People have called me Chuck from before I could even recognize my own name. I also was called B by my friends in the neighborhood in Malden where I grew up. I think the best thing about being a chuck is just straight raw potential… the world is ours!
