Life sure is full of coincidences, so i guess it makes sense that we got an email from UK dance music veteran Demi asking us to air a very special mix on our podcast while we were in London in January. While he’s been a major name in the game for a long time many of our listeners might not know Demi, because we’re from different musical worlds, but his SOS crew, which also includes, Omid16B and Desyn Masiello, has always been a guiding light in the world of tech/prog house. For us SOS first came to our attention with Desyn’s superb 2004 Bedrock compilation, which led us to check out an amazing SOS performance at WMC the following year. While their sound might not line up exactly with where we’re at these days, there’s no doubt these guys are DJ’s DJs, with impeccable selection and skill that shine through no matter what your taste.

So now you’re probably wondering how we ended up with a Demi mix on The Adventures Of Soul Clap. Apparently he’s been following our podcast for awhile now and felt it was the perfect home for this awesomely eclectic masterpiece of a mix. What makes this episode even more special is that the mix is a tribute to his friend and influential Londoner Jonny Rhythm who recently passed away and who’s memory lives on through this music.

Here’s what Demi says: “The mix is a reflection of some very special and personal moments shared with him and the eclectic tastes we shared. The mix was a labor of love and ended up being a work in progress for a year because of the varied sounds and samples/snips spliced and put together.”

We first met William Rauscher of Night Plane at the Marcy Hotel outside in the yard. It had been a long night and it was a beautiful Brooklyn morning and when we were introduced, his name immediately rang a bell. Wasn’t he the Resident Advisor writer who did the label of the month feature on Wolf + Lamb? He was! And wasn’t he the guy who reviewed the Love Light Edits EP on Wolf + Lamb Black? YES! Oh and didn’t he give us only 3 1/2 stars??? Well turns out William is a tough critic and this we can appreciate, but we told him “it was nice to meet you, but we only give this experience 3 1/2 stars”.

All ball busting aside, William is more than just a writer/blogger, he is also a very talented producer. His project Night Plane sounds like a stunning combination of new disco, house, jazz, rock and psychedelia that couldn’t be more timely as the lines of dance music continue to blur. Samples, synths and tons of reverb, William’s music is really impressive and when we received his mix of ALL ORIGINAL material, we knew we had podcast gold.

For more info on Night Plane check out the Myspace or the blog, but we think really the music speaks for itself. So without further ado, tracks by William, mixed by harry, here is Night Plane:

All The Colors Of The Dark
Let The Right One In
Back For More

When it comes to the few North Americans seriously stacking their discographies in recent years, few can compete with Jonny White. Representing Toronto, Jonny has been just slaying the Techno/House genre with releases on his own No. 19 Music, Ripperton’s Perspectiv Records and a ton of remix work including a feature alongside Tiefschwarz for Crosstown Digital Rebels. Unfortunately we’ve still never met face to face, however we’re already quite familiar with his music after discovering his after hours treasure “Rainsong” (No. 19 Music) back in 2008 and what a tune!

We asked Jonny to do a podcast a while back and this one came together live at his pad in Toronto New Years Day after a night of madness! The mix is loaded with original content and we’re thrilled that he gets things rolling with our new Clapz II Dogz project made with Voitek from Catz n Dogz. Lastly, you can catch Jonny White and us (Da Clap) on the same bill for the first time in Miami this year at Crosstown Rebels’s Get Lost WMC party. Enjoy Jonny White!

Right before Thanksgiving we did a mini US tour of New York, Chicago and Detroit and it felt pretty amazing. Everywhere we went we debuted new Soul Clap music and every time people went crazy. It really blew our minds to get such a great response in America, especially at such an American time as Thanksgiving. I’m not going to get into a discussion about the moral implications of t-day, but I will say it’s a special time for family and friends to get together here in the states so it meant alot for us to get so much love in our home country. Now, before it’s too late we wanted to give you, our beloved listeners all over the world a taste of what our pre t-day tour sounded like. This recording is the first hour of our 3 hour, early morning set at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel for Airdrop’s Late Supper. It features a bunch of exclusive new Soul Clap music, some of which has been released, but mostly is forthcoming and never coming out. Part 3 of the mix is a bit deeper for the sunrise and should be coming out on Airdrop’s Airpod in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

The first track of this mix is a remix we made with Gadi Mizrahi of the amazing Boston based band called Bad Rabbits. These guys make some serious throwback funk/rnb/new jack swing plus they are Slick Rick’s backing band so they’re def worth checking out. Their whole debut EP is available for free download over at Karmaloop and here we’re giving you our remix for free download. Enjoy!
So, what will 2010 hold for Tilly Jam? We’ve heard a taste of some new joints allegedly headed to Supplement Facts that are off the hook and if he get’s that track with the “Shanice” sample out of Reason he’d have another bomb! For year’s Phil has built a name for himself getting his super-DJ-friendly edits of new heat and classic cuts (which he makes with Audacity!!! go figure) into the right hands. Plus with advanced mixing skill, extraordinary programing ability and a slew of high profile DJ gigs opening for the big boys in his home town, it is commonly noted that Phil Stone is Chicago’s best DJ. We’re real pumped to have his contribution to the Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast and seems very fitting to have Phil close out one hell of an amazing year!
Somewhere along our last European tour we were in Berlin and our good friend Voitek (spelled Wojchiech, believe it our not) from 3 Channels aka Catz ‘n Dogz told us it was time to go to dinner. So to dinner we went, and when we got there we met Jay Shepheard. Jay is from the UK, but recently made the pilgrimage to Berlin along with so many others in search of dance music’s holy grail (which we think is actually somewhere in NYC!).

Jay is a kick ass DJ and solid producer with the bulk of his catalog on Munich’s Compost Records and Compost Black. Remix-wise he’s done work for Buzzin’ Fly, Four:Twenty, Dirt Crew and Faze Action to name a few. But that’s not really the point, the point is that after drinking many very tall beers and talking plenty of shit, we went back to Jay’s place (conveniently located across the street from the Neo-Nazi’s) to skin up and talk some more shit. While shit-talking, Jay put on this mix he recorded LIVE and we were like, ROCKINNNNN! So, away we go…

Part 2 of this 3 part podcast from Emmanuel’s Party Bucket in Leeds, UK takes us deep into the nights selection of New Disco, Funk and 80’s. The mood of the room really lit up as we took the night down this much anticipated path. If one thing was taken away from this party, if not our entire European tour it is the yearning our crowds had from not just “tracks” but SONGS!

This 50 min mix is jam packed with classics, re-edits (even some done on the fly) and a handful of unreleased material due out in the coming months. Sorry again, no track list

Shout outs to Mark and Paul from Death On The Balcony, these guys are working hard making original music and super fresh edits! Also, check out their new label MagicBag Music. First release is out now vinyl and digital. Oh yeah and we fancy you too Ste Roberts.

This is the first of two parts and contains a mostly deep house vibe. Sorry no track list!

Something for the weekend… Something to get you excited for No Regular Play’s Boston debut with Soul Clap at Midweek Techno next Wednesday (7/15/09)… Something…

…that I think we’ve been waiting for since we met these crazy faukers earlier this year, but they’re so busy being amazing that it took a little while for them to get it to us. Needless to say, it was well worth the wait. Can you say perfect mix of deep, wierd, house, techno, vocals, grooves, whatever? Can you say beautiful? The mix is dedicated to their friend Connor aka Onno, who runs the Cut&Mistake blog, appeared on their 1st EP and got hit by a car while they were getting it ready. Thankfully he’s doing fine now, but this one goes out to him!

If you don’t know already, No Regular Play, or NRP (like NPR, but with the P and the R switched, I know you saw the stickers in Miami and Deetroit) for short, is the duo of Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota (of all places) they moved to NYC awhile ago and are now part of this new generation of American producers that are turning dance music on its head. Their boundary pushing and amazingly wierd yet groovey Blonde Juan EP was released last year on Wolf + Lamb to worldwide acclaim and they’re New Rhythm EP drops in the next couple months (complete with Soul Clap remix . They do a dope live said and obviously from this mix can DJ like nobody’s business too. Get to swimming friends

I asked Greg if he had anything else wanted to tell his adoring fans and he said, “Thank you and good night.”

We immediately were on the same vibe and when he told me he called his crew/parties “Pitch It Down” I was totally sold. Since then we’ve partied with Nat a bunch of times in New York and I have to say he’s one of the craziest cats I know, plus he’s got a super hot girlfriend (who he named the mix after, so cute). But regardless of all that, this dude has impeccable taste in house music and knows how to keep it slow and sexy like few others I’ve heard. Get down to this shit for the summer yo!

You know, no joke intended, it takes a lot of BALLS to step forward as a female DJ in boy dominated Boston. There’s ego, testosterone, jealousy, no joke sometimes it can get really hairy, but our girl D-Lux, aka Laura Deluca, has proven time and time again that dance music is about a hell of a lot more than bromance!

D-Lux, a DJ who is continually refining her sound can be described as deep, drummy, tastefully techno and vocal with the appropriate feminine touch.
Sometimes the quality of talent that we have at our weekly Wednesday party, Midweek Techno, just BLOWS me away. Like does Boston even realize the resource they have right under their NOSES??? Doubtful, but alas, we keep on truckin.

Take for example a few months back when we PROUDLY presented the extraordinary talents of the young producer/live performer Nicholas Jaar. At only 19 years old (a FRESHMAN at Brown University) this young French transplant and musical prodigy has created quite a stir with releases for the likes of Wolf + Lamb and AirDrop Records and now on his own imprint, Clown and Sunset.

I’ve always been a bit iffy about Ableton sets, quite often it seems like the energy just isnt there. Nicolas Jaar’s performance however, is quite the contrary, his music weaves together like the gils of a french accordion, taking us all over the musical spectrum, way beyond simply DANCE music. Melodies, moods, emotions, seems like sky’s the limit for young Nico.

Just a few more tidbits: Seth Troxler’s remix of Nicolas Jaar “The Student” was the flipside to the recent deep bomb “Aphrika EP” that seems to be getting canned everywhere. Don’t sleep just cuz it doesn’t feature The Angelizer. Also, Nico is in cahoots with fellow Parisian Le Loup (performing at Midweek Techno June 3rd), who has also just released digitally the “See Line Ep” on Wolf + Lamb, again with a remix of “The Student” and another titled “Nico’s Bath Dance” which I imagine was created by both of these two yoots.

Tracklist:
Sorry, no idea what was played, although I think I hear the Violent Femmes in there!

You know, sometimes Boston can be a very difficult place to have good time. Sure there’s places to see and people to do, just like any other city, but it just feels like overall everyone is out for the taking. Well, that’s not true of Randy Deshaies, he just gives and gives and keeps on giving.

Deshaies is a New England DJ hero and one of Boston’s pioneers of the San Fran/Chicago house sound that swept the late 90’s and early 2000’s. His crew, the ever so rave-a-ly named Marz Entertainment, launched in the mid 90’s and ran for over a decade at the top of the local dance music scene and his Sunday night party at the Phoenix Landing called Bump, with resident DJs Randy, Sergio Santos and Ryan Obermiller was responsible for countless DJ sets from the likes of Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Heather, Colette, DJ Sneak, Diz, Justin Martin and many others.

Fast forward to the future and It is with great pleasure that we present a mix from Mr. Deshaies himself. Here’s a few words from the man who describes his podcast as “upbeat and vibey with a touch of nostalgia to grab the essence of DJing as I interpret it. [The songs represent] two decades of some instrumental tunes and choice selections that have shaped my passion for House Music. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride…”

For episode 49 of The Adventures Of Soul Clap we are honored to present an exclusive mix from a Boston house music don dada, the one and only DJ Bruno. From his residency (alongside Armand Van Helden) at Boston’s legendary Loft club in the early 90’s, to running Biscuithead Records, to his long-standing deep house party, Utopia Sundays, Bruno has been one of the guiding forces in the growth and health of the house scene (DJs, dancers, producers, promoters) in our little city for almost 2 decades. (For more on Bruno’s history in Boston check this piece from awhile back). For this mix Bruno took his sound a little darker and into the realms of techno, but still maintains his soulful flavor. So pour some baby powder on the dancefloor and get downs!

So, yes as you can tell, there has been a lot of Wolf + Lamb in our lives lately. From their unstoppable afterhours parties at the famed Marcy Hotel, to their recent leap from digital-only to a vinyl imprint, to the success of their all-star roster (Lee Curtiss, Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Nicholas Jaar, Le Loup, etc) it is safe to say that Wolf + Lamb are headed in the right direction.

For those that don’t know, Wolf + Lamb (aka Wuss + Lame) is the Brooklyn based tag team of Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi. These guys are more than just DJs/Producers. Together their combined vision has brought to life an entire lifestyle brand which promotes underground culture, music, events, design, clothing, Frisbees, chocolates, a fake boutique hotel/afterhours paradise, burning man installations, Talmudic studies and so much more.

We’ve been after these guys for a podcast for a while now, so here we present a 60 min mix of almost all forthcoming releases on the Wolf + Lamb label. Check out the track list and maybe you’ll recognize a track or two. Rumor has it that they will be releasing bootlegs soon as well, BWAHAHHAHAHA

Look out for Wolf + Lamb’s upcoming release the “Brooklynn EP” (WLM003) due out on vinyl March 9th.   The EP is super-sick start to finish with vocalist Smirk (the dude that did Lee Curtiss remixed “Start A Fire” on Sexy Dancer EP) on another catchy number called “Therapist” and an instant top choice re-edit by Shaun Reeves with an R&B/80’s feel called “If You Had”. Lastly, in case you’re wondering these are the songs that fuel Seth Troxlers Ibiza-Voice podcast from late January 2009, so eat it up.

Tracklist:

Le Loup’s production sound very similar to his his DJ mix, reaching into a melting pot of Jazz classics, house and an all around heavy Detroit/NYC vibe. This set fits perfectly both daytime or afterhours and is a tried and tested compliment to any smokey scenario .

Back in November, AirDrop had it’s Extraction Release Party for the Pl0t crew in Miami and we rocked it longside Paulo, Tanner Ross and Elon. We always love Miami and we partied hard, real hard, so hard we didn’t wake up until midnight Sat/Sun morn! As if we were school kids late for class we exploded out of bed (or air mattress) to the sound of a cell phone alarm and raced down to Big Fish. This place is a super-sick outdoor venue where the Safe Music peoples were presenting Cassy with opening duties from the king of all things “cake fart”, the very Crazy Larry. Lucky for Soul Clap, Larry blessed us with this exclusive recording of his 3 hour mix of expertly programmed deepness, which even features his remix of our forthcoming release for AirDrop Digital called Instafix.

For those who dont know, Crazy Larry is a recent Dever, Colorado transplant who has found his niche in the depths of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Over the past few years his production company Udder Madness (yes like a cow) has teamed up with NYC workhorses Blk-Market Membership to produce some of the USA’s top events including the now infamous Cheap Sunglasses event series.

Sorry NO TRACK LIST, if you’re really irked to know whats playing, reply with a time and we’ll try to ID.

Another holiday, another special Soul Clap mix. This time we were asked to create a Valentine’s Day experience in conjunction with our interview on Boldfacers, which sounded good to us (and hopefully to your ears), because, believe it or not we’ve never made a Valentine’s Day mix before. Our goal for “Make Love With Soul Clap” is to create a journey from an ocean of seduction, to a freaky late-night dancefloor to the bedroom and then beyond, to the outer reaches of the galaxy, before finally cooling down with the rhythm of romance. This is a mix designed for you to put on with your lover or freak-out to on your own, but most of all make sure to have it ready and waiting on Valentine’s Day. This special mix is hosted by Paulo and we hope you enjoy it.

Happy New Year everybody! I don’t have much time to explain this mix because we’re heading up to the mountains for a week of shenanigans, but here’s the two sentence breakdown. The last night of our December tour we played at The Bunker, one of the longest running, most revered techno nights in New York City. We opened up for Mikael Stavöstrand to celebrate the forthcoming release of our next AirDrop single, which Mikael remixed. Here’s the live recording.

It sure has been awhile since we posted an episode of The Podcast and we’re sorry about that, but now, just in time for your holiday of choice we present to you the first of 2 live recordings from our recent AirDrop tour. This recording comes courtesy of fellow AirDroper Crazy Larry who we played with at his going away (from Denver to NYC) party at the Beatport Lounge. They had just moved/upgraded the DJ booth and reinforced their Funktion One sound system with much more bass, which led to both good and bad results. The good: it sounded amazing, the booth felt great and a good time was had by all. The bad: the bass kept skipping our records and at one point vibrated our laptop right of the ledge of the booth and onto the dancefloor, luckily the compter survived, but we def learned our lesson, always secure that shit properly! So yeah, there are some crazy bits on this 2 hour trip, but the energy is all there.

Eddie Neal is a super old school Boston DJ who we were lucky enough to meet through Ross The Boss. Eddie gave Ross a CD for us to check out and we were just totally blown away and had to podcast it for you. Here’s what Eddie had to say. Respect.

When did you start DJing?
I started DJing in 1976. I was a sophomore at Boston University holding down a course load, enrolled in the School of Management and dividing my free time between martial arts and the gym, doing a radio show on the student run radio station and doing Disco and Funk dormitory parties on the weekends. I actually taught myself BPM mixing on two standard non-variable speed turntables.

Why did you start DJing?
I started DJing because it was fun to get a crowd of heads movin to the beat. I was on the cutting edge when new music was introduced. As a member of the New England DJ Association I was able to listen and make a determination regarding what would work on the dance floor and what would not. Call it “research of sound”. It was love at first spin and I was into it pretty bad.

What was Boston like back then (music, clubs, record stores etc)?

Back then the Boston club scene was not as open as it is now. Club managers and owners were very closed minded regarding patronage. There was a lot of prejudgements made about people around race and ethnicity. To put it bluntly; most club managers and owners liked to control what jocks played to keep the dance floor as “undiverse” as possible. This served as a deterrent for minority patronage and allowed very few opportunities for jocks of color like myself. I taught myself how to become multi-dimensional when it came to rockin a dance floor. This meant I could be successful regardless of the format. I spun dance rock, progressive rock, top 40, disco, funk, hi-energy, reggae and merengue. I also worked at the now extinct Strawberries Records for a few years in the early 80’s. This opened doors for me and I was one of very few black jocks to spin in the major Boston clubs including on Landsdowne Street. I also enjoyed a successful mobile DJ business for several years after college. Then I found my niche…

It was the music coming out of Chicago and New York in the early to mid 80’s that secured my interest and motivated me to built my proficiency in the art we call house music. Sure in the past 20 years house music has been put through many stages and branched off in a multitude of forms and factions. But when everything is said and done, progressive underground house will always be the original form, created from the soul and still powerful to this day and back in the day.

What’s this mix all about?
The “mystery” mix takes you on a journey through Chi-town and Uptown on a Friday night. I was going for soulful impact selections and basic masterful effects with three tables before the emergence of “push button” DJ technology. It was 1988.

What music are you into now?
House is in my blood and is here to stay. Occasionally I still do come out to lay it down the way it should be done. Cease to create and you will cease to exist. These days I’m feeling house, smooth jazz, neo-soul. I will forward a picture within the hour.

Being a primarily Hip-Hop focused DJ, to much of the world of electronic music he is a stranger and this is precisely why we’re giving him his Adventures of Soul Clap debut!

Inkognito has been doing his thing for way more than a decade bouncing back and forth between Boston, Providence and NYC. For years he was the go to guy at Skippy Whites record store (Rhode Island alongside local rave legend DJ Osheen) until one day the RIAA raided it for selling unlicensed mix CDs, an extremely popular item. During his time at the store he established an enormous collection of vinyl spanning the decades. When we asked Inkognito if we was interested in doing a mix that showed his connection to dance music, he jumped and turned out a solid deep house mix, laced with familiar vocals and the perfect energy for macking and relaxing!

Well it sure has been awhile since we had one of our own mixes on our own podcast. You must be starting to think that we’re lazy or something. Well maybe we are and maybe we aren’t, but here is a new Soul Clap mix on the Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast! This one was originally the set we played at Marina Bay Beach Club when we opened up for Armand, but as usual our recorder screwed up and we lost everything So we went back to the studio and did the whole thing over again. Everyone other then Armand playing at the party was more on the loud electro side of music so we felt it was our duty to keep it nice and deep and housey, but still big and moody. I mean we were outside on the beach and the sun was setting. So hopefully as the weather starts to change you can put this one on in the headphones and feel all warm and sunsety again

Boston native Loren Lindsley has been supporting nightlife in the local scene for eons. It was unknown, however, until recently that he is also a collector of electronic music and one hell of a DJ!

Here is what Loren had to say about his set: “The mix has a deep, dark, and moody sound — more of a dreamy introspective head-trip than a dancefloor set, but with a few glitchy tracks thrown in to keep the energy up. I included a few tracks from Japanese producers and/or Japanese labels, and those sort of set the tone for it (starting right at the first track).”

Shout to Loren for coming correct. For more info, check him out here.

The words I chose for the title of the latest episode of the podcast are either really appropriate or not appropriate at all. I think they really fit the musical stylings of this deep, moody and melodic techno mix that Inanna turned our for us, but after knowing her for so many years I can’t really say that I would use a word that implies violence when describing Jamie’s personality. I guess it’s more her love of electronic music that makes the name Inanna fit so well, because she’s been around long enough to say she played garage and 2-step with me at Runnin’ Fridays and countless other ghetto New England area events. These days she’s busy showcasing her more mature brand of techno on ear catching original tracks, her own label (La Folia Recordings) and of course, right here on The Adventures Of Soul Clap! For more on Inanna make sure to check the interview on Midweek Techno.

I first encountered Sassmouth at an afterhours party at DEMF this year at a crazy place called Bert’s On Broadway (at first I thought was called Burst On Broadway because some Deee-troit Basketball fans were yelling the name after the Oslo party got broken up because of a drive-by outside). It was probably like 8am and the party was definitely dieing down, until bam, Sassmouth & Punisher get on the decks and proceed to keep it going for like 2 more hours. While, Punisher beat it as usual, it was Sassmouth who really impressed with her banging, but simultaneously funky drum style of techno/house. The next day I ran into her at the festival and the rest is history. Now we’ve hit the jackpot and she’s blessed us with a spectacularly dope mix of all her favorite sounds of now (which btw are also some of my favs). As I write this she’s being a hippie and playing at Camp Bisco, but we’ll forgive her for that and because she’s coming to play at Midweek Techno soon, so watch out or you may get sassed.

As always, shout out to Jessy Nite for the artwork! She’s got a new website here.

Today we began something new! We’re calling it Soul Clap Snack Pack Jack Attack Radio and it’s our new weekly radio show, broadcast live from NOON-2pm on Boston’s freshest internet radio station Utopia Boston Radio, which is the brainchild of our city’s house music godfather, DJ Bruno and Seed Recordings front man, Bradford James. Rather than just do a straight up mix format like the Adventures Of Soul Clap Podcast, the concept for Snack Pack Jack Attack is to provide lunchtime listening leisure, in a more traditional lunch hour radio format. The show is broadcast live from our studio on the mothership each week so we’re going to be pulling tons of forgotten favs from our vinyl collection and also hosting the show and announcing what we’re playing. We’ll also be recording the show every week and posting it on the blog and eventually as it’s own podcast (the question is: should we add it to our current podcast feed or make a new one? Let us know what you think). Here’s our first episode, make sure to keep it locked!

Following their recent success of anthems like “Zinga “on Get Physical and “Bahia” on Mothership Music, The Boyz aka Marco and Fede have jumped feet first into a touring schedule made of dreams. We wish them the best for the summer months and can’t wait until they return.

DJ Melee is a phenomenon amongst men, whose unlimited enthusiasm and funkyass DJ sets have made him one of the most important people to the New England dance music landscape over the last decade. From his Shadows of Society raves in the late 90’s, to his Friday residency at Avalon Boston (before they tore it down), to his work for Redbull Music Academy bringing legendary artists like Bernard Purdie to Boston, to his excellent selections as a buyer at Satellite Records and now as founding member of LAB Boston, Melee puts in serious work to make our home base a better place for electronic beats.

Melee’s style has evolved from an early love of breakbeats into what he likes to call tech-funk, which he describes as “a term that covers an open-minded combination of breaks, house, techno & electro.” All we know is that Melee always comes funky and banging and this is a perfect mix to get you fired up for the festival season! Here’s some final words from the man himself: “I made this mix especially for my buddy’s at the Soulclap. It’s a blend of the finest tech-funk out there. I spit hot fiya, blast ya speakers and tickle ya fannys.”

But before I explain I want to thank everyone that came through Redline on Saturday and filled our indoor edition of D.O.T.C. with the kind of energy that dreams are made of. Trus’me kept the packed dancefloor moving with his amazing blend of disco, house, techno and beyond for the last two hours, but before that I had the chance to play some proper partytime house music. So before we serve you with the next official episode of the podcast here’s a little bonus live set from your’s truly, no tracklist, just the goods. See you back at the Marsh Post on June 28th!

Back in November for Episode 22 we posted a mix and interview of our homey Aaron who runs Dae Recordings out of Chicago. Aaron is originally from Philly and spins straight up house music, so his mix was pretty different than the more techno oriented sets we usually podcast (you know we like to keep it diverse). What happened next was that we got an amazing response from our listeners, everyone was so refreshed to hear house music that emails poured in thanking us for the change of pace. Well all you house heads, have we got a treat for you! An encore presentation from Mr. Dae himself, and this time he kept it super slow and groovy in turning out a true summertime mastermix.

Here’s what Aaron had to say for himself:

“So I think I stumbled across “this sound”, which my buddy Nathan G. coined Electronik Soul, a couple years back in my ex-girlfriend’s record collection. Ah the day is so clear! It was a wikked single on DIY Records with a Schmoov! remix. However, the remix & original were a bit more on the downtempo tip. Nevertheless, I proceeded in my usual research fashion and quickly fell in love. The thing that gets me about this style of house is that it’s timeless. It’s got a groove that never seems to go out of fashion. The perfect blend of disco, soul, funk, and electronic yummyness that makes my heart flutter. Oddly enough, I can count the number of producers making this style on just about one hand (the majority being from the UK). Big shouts to John Buckby aka Schmoov! & Nathan Boddy aka Office Gossip @ Winding Road Recs, Crazy Penis, Hot Toddy, Ron Basejam, Lovebirds, Spirit Catcher, Rhythm Plate, & Ian Pooley.”

Tracklist
01. Hot Toddy – Don’t Spill The Wine – Winding Road
02. Dirty Jesus – Don’t Fuck With My Shit (Salt City Fuck With Erics Shit) – Paper
03. Freakers Orchestra – Message From Kiellands Plass – Glasgow Underground
04. Crispin J. Glover Feat. Mary O. – It’s Over Now (Kenny Hawkes Vocal Mix) – True
05. Office Gossip – Jigsaw – Flat & Round
06. Jamiroquai – Main Vein (Knee Deep Dub) – Sony
07. Ciudad Feliz – All Your Feelings – Silver Network
09. Hot Toddy – Delta Blues – Winding Road
10. Ananda Project – Where The Music Takes You – King Street
13. Problem Kids Feat. Steve Edwards – S’alright (Crazy Penis Bad Dismount Mix) – Paper
14. Nova Fronteira Feat. Sukima Thomas – Keep It Like This – Z Records

Some last words from Aaron:
“This mix was made the ol’ fashioned way: using two Technics SL1200-MK2 turntables and one Pioneer DJM 300-S mixer. Call it a throwback! The acapella entitled Akabu – Phuture Bound (Fxapella) – (Z Records) and the sound fx from Nu Rhythmix – Urban Safari (Swing City) were used throughout this mix. Mastering of this mix was done by Marcus Aurelius @ M-Lab in Milwaukee, WI. Let’s blast off to space…”

Although its not the fully functional Soulclap tag team, its still nice to have a few solo performances here and there. This is a set from a few weeks back at Wednesday’s @ Phoenix Landing when I opened up for our boy Pito representing Biatch Corp NYC. In time leading up to that set I had been hooked on all this seriously deep, drummy, headie, housey music, so this mix really reflects that.

Up until last week I had played at Phoenix Wednesdays 3 times since we started our residency there and each time something went wrong with the recording. But I guess the 4th times the charm because the recorder finally worked and it sure was good timing because it was my first chance to play the closing set and I was already feeling Miami mode. Needless to say the recording came out dope and it’s the perfect pre-WMC podcast cause it’s all bouncy house and techno fo dat azz. See you in the sun…

We finally did it. Last Thursday for the first time ever we performed a set that wasn’t on 2 decks. It wasn’t even both of us on 4 decks and 2 mixers. It was Elyte & Cnyce performing on 2 mixers, 1 laptop, 1 turntable, 1 tape deck, 1 Korg MS2000 synth and 1 Kozoh Vespa delay box. It included about 50% original material and the other 50% totally mixed and edited wierdness. It happened at Modulations (pics by Dave Day here) and we recorded the whole damn thing (we got video too that we’ll share when it’s edited). Witness the birth of Soul Clap LIVE! right here, right now on Episode 26 of the Adventures of Soul Clap.

Hey, if you’re wondering why you’re looking at a flashing animation of a scantily clad lady wearing a party hat (shout to Miss Jessy for that btw), it is because we are celebrating the 25th episode of the Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast. Wow, 25 episodes… not bad for our first year, thats 2 and 1/12th episodes per month! Looking back, we’ve proudly hosted some amazing guests and definitely had some awesome mixes of our own. So thanks to all who contributed and of course to our growing subscribers, its been an honor to share the web-waves with all of you. Anyways, here ya go, episode 25.

According to wikipedia, the word “Charlie” is a nickname for Charles, which is Germanic in origin and means “free-man”. The name Charlie may also refer to: The letter C in the NATO phonetic alphabet and FAA aviation phonetic letters, Charlie, short for “Victor Charlie”, or VC, military slang for the Viet Cong, Charlie class submarines of the Soviet Navy, Charlie (parrot), the name of a pet possibly owned by Winston Churchill, Charlie (band), a British rock band in the 1980s, “Charlie” (song), a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Charlie the Tuna, the cartoon mascot for StarKist Tuna, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a series of novels and films, and their main character, Charlie Bucket, Charlie’s Angels and the unseen boss, Charles “Charlie” Townsend, Charlie Dog, Chuck Jones’ late 1940s cartoon character, CharlieCard, a smart card used for electronic ticketing by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Charlie, a fragrance sold by Revlon, a cosmetics company, “Charlie X“, an episode of the original Star Trek series, Charlie, an album by the band Melt-Banana, The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_S._Roberts_Award" title="Charles S.
Last Wednesday at Phoenix Landing, however, Charlie just so happened to be the first name of both DJs, Cnyce and Caseroc, who played together for the first ever “Go Chuck Yourself” party. The music that night was nasty, and Cnyce’s opening performance set a vibe we felt worthy of podcasting for you.

Merry Xmas! We hope Santa brought you just what you wanted. What did we wake up to find under our Hanukkah bush? A brand spankin’ new podcast from our homie Tanner Ross. If you’re not familiar with Boston’s golden child of electronic music production you can catch up on what we’ve written on him here and here. But if you’re too lazy for that, here’s a brief explanation of why we talk about T. Ross all the time. First, dude started doing his thing with fellow Jerseyer Killowatts (who has an insane xmas song on his myspace). Then he started, producing with Matty D. as The Bald & The Beautiful. Next, he caught the attention of none other than Claude VonStroke who signed him on to do a remix of “Who’s Afraid Of Detroit“. Tanner flipped it serious on a 12″ that also included mixes by Audion and Kevin Saunderson and the rest is history. Now he has bigbig tunes like “Facemelt” & “Krueger Fingers” (with Kilowatts) on VonStroke’s Dirtybird and “The Curse” (as Voodeux) on Mothership as well as a remix of Blaze’s classic “Lovelee Dae” that dropped on OM and a genre bending broken beat mix of Jahcoozi’s “Double Barrel Name” (by The Bald & The Beautiful). And the best is obviously yet to come, with a soon forthcoming EP on longtime house staple/stable Freerange and almost daily announcements of pending megadeals shouted from his room on Aldie Street (also home to Cnyce & Sergio Santos, what a house house).

You can buy Tanner’s latest release “The Curse” here. And for you digital onlys here’s Tanner on Beatport.

We met Aaron from Dae Recordings for the first time on one of his killer WMC boat cruises a few years back. When I say these parties were off the charts I mean it, three floors of music, top shelf open bar, the whole nine. At the time Aaron lived in Philly, had just started his label and was releasing and playing dope funky, bumpy, house jackers. Fast forward to now and our man has relocating to the house mecca Chi-town and has refocused his sound around deep soulfulness, while maintaining his signature funk and for Episode 22 he has blessed us with a mix of pure house bliss PLUS a super exclusive interview and charts to match. From the future soul of the opening track to the classic amazingness of alltime Soulclap favs Hallelujah and The Pressure we’re sure you’ll love this one as much as we do!

AND HERE’S THE INTERVIEW

Where you from?
I was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL but grew up in Brooklyn, NY.

Where you at?
I am currently residing in Chicago after doing a long stint in Philly.

2 truths and a lie
I love animals. I like to eat ice cream just about every day. Pimpin’ ain’t easy.

What music are you into/producer/spin/release?
Right now, I guess I would classify what I’m into as Deep House with a decent amount of vocals to it. It’s soulful but not sleepy and has some funk to it. It’s funny because I used to dislike this kind of sound! I was more into the funky jackin’ stuff that I usually put out on Dae Recordings. This is really why I’m launching my new sub-label: Dae Deep. It’ll give me an opportunity to put out a sound that I’m really into these days. It’s where my heart & soul are! As far as producers go, I’m pretty keen on people like Joey Negro, Masters At Work, Phil Asher, Restless Soul, Fanatix, Ralf Gum, Jon Cutler, Spen & Karizma, Simon Gray, Richard Earnshaw, The Jinks, Liquid People, Reel People, Knee Deep, Fudge, The Sole Channel guys (Mr. V, Alix Alvarez, Will “Reelsoul” Rodriguez), Bobby & Steve, and Copyright. I also play a mixture of stuff from the whole crew of Nottingham guys: Schmoov! (who runs and owns Winding Road Records), Crazy P, Hot Toddy, Ron Basejam, Office Gossip, and Rhythm Plate. They have a real distinct sound that I feel is really all their own. I have been into that kind of spacey / disco-ish / funk / house sound for a bit now and actually just released an EP (Flash It Out) from Schmoov! on my Dae Recordings imprint.

What was the first records you ever bought?
Well, early on when I was first starting to play records in the mid 90’s I was really into Funky Breakbeats and I primarily liked the stuff coming out of Florida. I think the first record I ever bought was called Beats-A-Rockin by DJ Icee on Zone Records. I still actually have it! It was an easy record to learn how to beat match with. I also picked up some Bassbin Twins stuff around the same time.

Your most treasured record?
Hmmmmmm. . .I love so many of my records, but I only have doubles of one and it never ever leaves my bag. I guess that would constitute my most treasured record! It’s called Shelter and is by Deep Swing Pres. Xavior (Soulshine Records). However, the Louis Benedetti (one of my all time favorite producers & owner of Soulshine) Dub didn’t appear on the original version of the record nor did it appear on a repress they did with a different track on the B side. People often say I have that, but I don’t have that version. I guess with the whole digital wave though, no record can be that treasured anymore!

What was the first rave/club/party you went too?
Amazingly, I remember this just like it was yesterday. Many moons ago in NYC, I was very big into rollerblading/skateboarding and just so happened to meet another skater by the name of Ani (from Dee-Lite). He told me how he was a DJ and plays at these “rave” parties. I had never been to one and he kept informing and keeping me up to date on his gigs one of which was at this party called The Living Room (3rd St. between Ave. B & C – shit’s engrained in my mind). Around the same time, my Brooklyn Russian skate buddies told me about this “rave” called Maskarave that they had gone to and the way they described it was fucking nuts! I had to go! So, I convinced one of the skater guys to take me there and I had this elaborate scheme to tell my parents about me sleeping over there and us working on editing some skate video stuff. Everything was a GO and all set up until I got to my buddies house and he said “sorry man I can’t go tonight because my parents are home”. I was about crushed as I had been anticipating this moment for weeks! I begged, pleaded, guilted, and eventually hatched another scheme to get us out without him getting in trouble. It basically consisted of a tall tale about how another skate buddy had “run away” from home and his mother called us asking for help finding him etc etc. He took the preverbal bait and we were on our way to my first “rave” – The Living Room! We got there and I remember there being no sound bleeding through to the street and just a building with a bunch of metal roll down gates. Apparently, there was “knock on the second gate three times” system and out came a burly security guard who then let us into an alley where we waited to get searched. We then entered through another set of doors into an area with a ticket booth and none other than DJ Db working the counter. I walked up to the window and he said “oh sorry man no shorts”. I couldn’t believe I had made it all this way to be turned away because of my baggy Planet Earth skate shorts. I said to Db “please man you don’t know what I went through to get here” and he replied “ok well maybe if you pull them down a little bit so they look more like pants”. I quickly agreed and began to adjust them when he exclaimed “APRIL FOOLS! get on in there”. I think I laughed, gave him a couple choice words and was on my way in through yet another set of doors. Once inside the “main room” I was dazzled by the strobe light/blaring music sensory mindfuck! It was all over then as I said ” I don’t know how on earth I’m going to get here next week, but I WILL BE HERE” and the rest is one for the “rave” history books! Here I am about 12-15 years for later still involved with electronic music. CRAZY!!!!!

Most embarrassing rave movement?
Ha Ha! Must I pick one of the many? I guess I would have to say the most embarresing moment took place while living in Orlando, FL. I was super “candy raved” out back then. I mean bleach blonde hair, platform shoes, book-bag, glow stars on my face, and the whole shebang! Anyways, I was going to be moving back to NYC and was attending one final huge rave in Orlando. I was so amped up and was insistent on taking all these great pictures to take back and show everyone in New York. I had my camera all set and ready to GO! This girl I was dating at the time and myself made one stop before the party to hang with some other friends. Everything was great and there was plenty of excitement in the air as we prepared to roll out to the “rave” (Energy 2 @ The Edge). I was actually underage at the time so we had to sneak in through the back. The plan was successful and we were in! The party was packed and the music was pumpin’. One small problem, I forgot the damn camera. Now mind you, there was and maybe still is a twelve o’clock curfew in downtown Orlando for all kids under eighteen years of age. I had already gotten caught once and got away with a warning. So me being so insistent on taking these damn pictures decided we had to leave, go back to our friends house, get the camera, and come back. Sounded good at the time right? Wrong! We came out of the club and there were police all over. As we made our way towards the car, I noticed a large group of “ravers” along a wall and a policemen on the other side of the sidewalk. They had all been stopped, detained, and awaited transport to the police station. We just tried to “be cool” and walk right by which almost worked. However, some girl that I knew was one of the kids up against the wall and shouted out “Hey Aaron” and it was all over. The cop started yelling “Hey you two come over here. I need to see some ID”. We tried to keep walking, but he wasn’t having it. . Once he stopped us, I tried to explain that I “left my ID in the car” and that we had been in the club already. I even showed him the re-entry wrist band that we got on the way out and informed him that the door guy could vouch for us. No dice! So up against the wall we went and then into a cruiser headed for the station. We ended up in some sort of late night court and I waited for my name to be called. Sure enough, my prior run-in with the curfew had come back to haunt me! I sat there all decked out in the holy grail of “candy rave” getups and watched as each and everyone got a warning for their 1st offense. Eventually, I was left there with glow stars on my face sitting next to some people who had committed some real crimes. Off to jail I went and the whole nine (photo, fingerprints, etc) was given to me. My Dad had to come pick me up and didn’t do so till the following morning. Now that was an embarrassing moment for the “rave” history books!

What was the best place you ever played?
I would really have to say at Sundae in Philadelphia. It’s the party that was started by Lee Jones, Dj Dirty (1/2 of the Housing Project) and myself (other 1/2 of the Housing Project). I’ve played a decent amount of places stateside and beyond, but there is just something about the vibe at this event. It’s so damn thick! I’m actually in Philadelphia right now as I’m playing the party this Sunday.

What was the wierdest place you ever played?
I would have to say Pittsburgh, PA. It could also double as the worst place I ever played. I think this place was a coffee house or something where that had shows so underage kids could attend. Something was just plain bizarre about it and it was a pretty empty gig. I think it was one of those surreal moments where you ask yourself “why on earth am I here”.

Proudest musical accomplishment
I would say that I’m most proud of 2 things.

One is an event I did two years in a row called Floatin’ which took place in South Beach Miami on a huge 3 level luxury yacht. It was the biggest scale event I have ever coordinated. The total cost for the yacht rental including top-shelf open bar for 4hrs for 400 people was $30,000.00. It was really daunting and had so many more variables and room for error than a normal size event. I was a bit nervous about it all, but I put my mind to it and made it a success both years. Some of the people on the bill were: Questlove (from the Roots), J-Boogie, Andy Caldwell, Onionz, MFR, SS & Shy Fx, Grooverider, and Fabio.

The second thing I’m most proud of is my label: Dae Recordings. It really weirds me out when people from all over the globe tell me that they know and really like the label. I’m just glad to still be around after watching so many labels fall by the wayside. We are about to put out our nineteenth release (Johnny Fiasco & Joshua Heath – Half & Half EP).

Vinyl or digital?
Well, up until recently I was very much all vinyl. However, the rapidly rising cost of vinyl and the lack of vinyl release availability from the labels I like (some of them are not even doing vinyl anymore – ex. MN2S) is turning me into a Digital guy. I wish it wasn’t that way, but. . .
A. I can’t get the music I want on vinyl.
B. I can pay $65.00 and get 6 pieces of vinyl (if that) or get 25-30 tracks digitally.
C. I can and will be getting Serato where I can have the best of both worlds (playing digital tracks in a vinly format)
YOU DO THE MATH!
