Episode 90: Tanner Ross In The Shady Shores

Tanner Ross, Tanner Black, T-Rex, the list goes on and on, but nicknames only begin to describe our love affair with our favorite person to ever be born in New Jersey. So it’s hard to believe that the last time Mr. Ross graced the Adventures of Soul Clap was all the way back in December 2007, but it really has been almost 4 years since he turned out this deep, dark mix of techno and house jams. Just compare the tracklist of that mix with this one and it’s obvious how much has changed. Way back then we didn’t even have a record out, but Tanner already had a ton of releases under his belt and that was even before his Voodeux project blew up on Mothership Records. We basically spent the next 2 years trying to catch up and finally got on the level to work on music together in 2009, which became our S.E.C.T. project. The last year has seen us take our game to the next level, but as we’ve spread our wings, it’s always been important for us to bring our homies up too and we’ve been lucky enough do just that with Tanner as he signed to Wolf + Lamb and tours Europe with us on Geist Agency.

Now, the whole story comes full circle with a Tanner Ross & Soul Clap EP due out on Wolf + Lamb this month. It’s called the Shady Shores EP because we wrote or finished the music together during our retreat last winter in Miami Shores, which became known as Shady Shores for reasons that will go unmentioned ;) While Tanner didn’t make this mix there, it’s a mix inspired by our time together in different places. From years in Boston, to sessions in Miami, to the last month of mayhem at the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, this is music that we listen to when we’re just hanging out, playing ping-pong or J’n-Oh. It’s the soundtrack to life, love and family being together worked together by a DJ at the top of his game. Welcome to Tanner’s world…

Thanks Tanner! We love you :)

Boston Doing It BIG on RA

Ah yes, what a proud moment indeed! How often is it that Boston gets proper love on Resident Advisor? Very rarely. And how often is it that TWO roommates (Cnyce and the great Tanner Ross) receive nearly back-to-back features on the same day?? Dude, like NEVAH kid!

Anyways, mega props to Tanner Ross and James aka Killowatts for their hard work on the long awaited Voodeux album titled The Paranormal slated for release in July on Claude Von Stroke’s Mothership label, and big up the Soul Clap massive because the legacy of the “Love Light” and “Conscious” edits on due out in June on Wolf + Lamb Black just keeps on living!

Sunday School For Degenerates

After the show, its the after party. And after the party, I guess you pass out on a roof?

Also, check out Tanner’s weekend at Water Taxi Beach in NYC.

7/9/08 – Tanner Ross (Mothership, AirDrop)

Wednesday July 9th, Midweektechno gets up close and personal with Boston flyboy Tanner Ross. His work with Claude Von Stroke’s Dirty Bird Recordsx and Mothership Music as well as the UK based Freerange Records have quickly catapulted him into the record bags of many DJ greats. Warming up is Boston favorite Matty Dimond, former T. Ross production partner and quality selector extrodinare.

See the boys get beautifully bald on the dance-floor and possibly end up looking like this or this.

Soulclap in XLR8R June/July ’08 Issue

Our first music review from XLR8R’s Nick Chacona and some solid national press for “die Ente” and “The Giraffe“. Can you believe a “Bronx-born New Yorker” is saying “Boston is representin’”?

Here’s the full write-up:

“As a Bronx-born New Yorker, it’s not really in my blood to say that Boston is representin’ in any way, but considering the magnitude of the first releases from the new AirDrop imprint, it looks like they’re in the midst of a real (tea) party. Both releases come from Soulclap, the duo of Cnyce and DJ Elyte. The label’s inaugural release, “The Giraffe,” is a limited-edition colored-vinyl 10″ that features a mix from Franco Cinelli that’s straight out of Lee Curtis‘ twisted tech-house playbook. The second single, “die Ente,” also keeps things on the deep-tech tip initially, then launches into some serious early ’90s-style synth-sax house business that could fit easily into Luciano‘s and Quentin Harris‘ sets. Boston’s hero of the moment, dirtybirds’s Tanner Ross, is enlisted here on mix duties, and utilizes some highly reverbed crystalline synth tones and thunderous bass growls to full modern-rave effect.”
-En Tu Casa, p. 100, XLR8R #118 June/July 2008

There’s also a PDF of the whole issue if you’re interested.

6/20/08: AirDrop Boston Division at Rise Afterhours

From the AirDrop Blog:

For those that were not fortunate enough to come to NYC for the AirDrop Records release party or fly to El Salvador last week-end for Soulclap’s monsoon-like performance, this time we will do it up a bit different, since it is back to home territory and like our beloved Celtics they just always kill at home!

Soulclap and Tanner Ross are all fresh with some new productions that have successfully transported their names and the Boston rep around the world from Claude Vonstroke’s Turntables to Josh Wink’s world tour. Pat Fontes keeps his King of Techno’s crown well screwed on the top of his head. With some releases out on labels like Thoughtless music and currently launching his own label, that is sure to showcase some top talent, including his own productions which are turning the court’s heads.

So come bring the local support for the fresh fruit party with Soulclap, Tanner Ross, Pat Fontes who will be playing the upstairs and Matt Dimond in the lounge below who will take the evening deeper underground (not in the Jamiroquai way- duh!)

PLUS one of our favorite Boston DJs Matty Dimond is in the lounge.

5/30/08: AirDrop QuackParty

It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the release of The Giraffe, but we’re already getting ready for our second vinyl release on AirDrop Records so it’s time to party again and this time around it’s going down in their home city of NYC. It’s also happening at one of the best venues for techno in the Big Apple, Bar13, home of the BLK|Market Membership and Biatch Corp events. And never ones to forget our friends, we’re bringing Boston down there with us: die Ente remixer Tanner Ross is headlining and fellow Midweek Techno residents Pat Fontes & Sergio Santos are warming it all up (click the links to check podcasts they’va done for us). The best part? Admission is only $5 if you RSVP here!

Episode 23: Tanner Ross Tales From The Darkside

Merry Xmas! We hope Santa brought you just what you wanted. What did we wake up to find under our Hanukkah bush? A brand spankin’ new podcast from our homie Tanner Ross. If you’re not familiar with Boston’s golden child of electronic music production you can catch up on what we’ve written on him here and here. But if you’re too lazy for that, here’s a brief explanation of why we talk about T. Ross all the time. First, dude started doing his thing with fellow Jerseyer Killowatts (who has an insane xmas song on his myspace). Then he started, producing with Matty D. as The Bald & The Beautiful. Next, he caught the attention of none other than Claude VonStroke who signed him on to do a remix of “Who’s Afraid Of Detroit“. Tanner flipped it serious on a 12″ that also included mixes by Audion and Kevin Saunderson and the rest is history. Now he has bigbig tunes like “Facemelt” & “Krueger Fingers” (with Kilowatts) on VonStroke’s Dirtybird and “The Curse” (as Voodeux) on Mothership as well as a remix of Blaze’s classic “Lovelee Dae” that dropped on OM and a genre bending broken beat mix of Jahcoozi‘s “Double Barrel Name” (by The Bald & The Beautiful). And the best is obviously yet to come, with a soon forthcoming EP on longtime house staple/stable Freerange and almost daily announcements of pending megadeals shouted from his room on Aldie Street (also home to Cnyce & Sergio Santos, what a house house).

You can buy Tanner’s latest release “The Curse” here. And for you digital onlys here’s Tanner on Beatport.

Unofficial Boston House/Techno Week Part 1

mothership connection - tanner ross + italoboyz
The Mothership Connection (Marco Italo, Tanner Ross, Fede Italo)

So I’m almost recovered from the first weekend of unofficial Boston house/techno week and here are is a quick recap for you out-of-towners/lame-ass-Boston-mofos-that-complain-that-nothing-ever-goes-on-
and-then-don’t-even-go-out-for-our-biggest-week-ever. Farina on Friday at Rise Afterhours was packed out, however he played the same jacking deep house he’s been playing for at least 7 years and when he dropped a remix of this, I had to leave. Apparently the place was packed til at least 5am so that’s a good thing for Boston, but it’s clear that people here are stuck in like 2003 at the latest.

There were alot of zombie’s out Saturday, but even Underworld & Digweed in Boston couldn’t fill the 5,500 capacity Bank of America Pavilion on Saturday (only around 1,200 people showed up, which is still amazing for this city). I wasn’t about to miss the first electronic music event at Boston’s biggest outdoor concert space, even though we live in puritan land and it only went to 11pm. When we showed up at like 7:30, Digweed was playing spaced out dopeness to like 200 people, ridiculous. But by the time the headliners went on at 9:30 all 1,200 people in there were up front going nuts, so it was still an amazing show. But of course there were NO COOL AFTERPARTIES!

Sunday was the biggest disappointment of the bunch. First, Charlie’s car overheated while going to pick Italoboyz up and dudes and their agent (big thanks to Tania from Play Kula) had to rent a car and drive up from New York, which would have been fine…but so few people showed up that even the 100 person capacity Phoenix Landing looked empty. It was all good cause Tanner’s opening set was heatrocks and Italoboyz play the most tripped out minimal with little voices and opera samples and everyone in the spot went nuts, but come on Boston, a showing like this for Pig&Dan tomorrow night and we quit bringing you the best future music in the world…for real.
